Every time a young person is harmed by violence, our nation's future strength and growth are jeopardised. We are losing our next generation of young people -- our future community builders and leaders -- to homicide at an alarming rate. Beyond premature death, youth violence causes emotional, academic, and physical scars that limit young people's potential independence, growth, and success. When the opportunities of our young people are curtailed by youth violence, we all suffer the negative and long-lasting consequences. Preventing Youth Violence: Opportunities for Action by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is designed to help communities use what is known about youth violence and put in place prevention approaches that work. The information provided in this book will help communities learn more about the causes and impact of youth violence and identify actions each of us can take to stop youth violence.

Youth violence is a significant public health problem that affects thousands of young people each day, and in turn, their families, schools, and communities. Youth violence occurs when young people between the ages of 10 and 24 years intentionally use physical force or power to threaten or harm others. This illustrated technical package provides an overview about youth violence and evidence-based strategies for community leaders, families, school administrators, teachers, law enforcement, and state leaders to utilize as methods for youth violence prevention. Some example strategies include: Preschool enrichment with family engagement and parent education Mentoring/After School programs Hospital community partnership programs Youth volunteer opportunities While individual skills are important and research has demonstrated the preventive effects of many youth skill development programs, approaches addressing relationships with parents, peers, and other caring adults as well as approaches that influence school and community environments are equally important to have the greatest public health impact. This report from the United States Surgeon General is the result of a review of the scientific literature and analyses of new data relating to youth violence. It identifies and quantifies factors, in particular settings of combinations, that increase the probability that violence will occur. It also presents an array of interventions of well-documented effectiveness in helping young people whose lives are already marked by a propensity for violence as well as in preventing others from viewing violence as a solution to needs, wants, or problems. This report is divided into six chapters. The first serves as an introduction and offers chapter conclusions for chapters two through five. Those chapters discuss the magnitude of youth violence; the developmental dynamics of youth violence; risk factors for youth violence; and prevention and intervention. The final chapter examines a vision for the future. Each chapter includes a list of references. The executive summary of this report is included in a separate booklet. (Contains an index.) (MKA)
