Memory is a constructed system of references, in equilibrium, of feeling and rationality. Comparing ancient and contemporary mechanisms for the preservation of memories and the building of a common cultural, political and social memory, this volume aims to reveal the nature of memory, and explores the attitudes of ancient societies towards the creation of a memory to be handed down in words, pictures, and mental constructs. Since the multiple natures of memory involve every human activity, physical and intellectual, this volume promotes analyses and considerations about memory by focusing on various different cultural activities and productions of ancient Near Eastern societies, from artistic and visual documents to epigraphic evidence, and by considering archaeological data. The chapters of this volume analyse the value and function of memory within the ancient Near Eastern and Egyptian societies, combining archaeological, textual and iconographical evidence following a progression from the analysis of the creation and preservation of both single and multiple memories, to the material culture (things and objects) that shed light on the impact of memory on individuals and community.

The discovery of 17,000 tablets at the mid-third millennium BC site of Ebla in Syria has revolutionized the study of the ancient Near East. Can archaeology be considered a factor of socio-economic development for civil society? This, in short, is the question underlying the first national workshop devoted to Public Archaeology (Archeologia Pubblica in Toscana: un progetto e una proposta, Aula Magna, 12 July 2010), organised by the Chair of Mediaeval Archaeology of the University of Florence with the collaboration of the Universities of Pisa and Siena. The meeting also provided the opportunity to communicate the socio-economic results of a case study of projects that the Tuscan universities have recently successfully developed in this sector, involving local authorities, museums, public and private enterprises in forms of active partnership. Public archaeology is seen as the updating of the original vocation of the discipline to address the contemporary, in terms of economics, governance, communication, identity of the archaeological assets and the respective social communities.

Negli ultimi anni l'interesse per le ricerche archeologiche compiute nel Vicino Oriente si è ulteriormente accentuato indirizzandosi verso una delle nuove frontiere dell'archeologia orientale, quella legata al riesame e, quando possibile, alla reinterpretazione della documentazione di insediamenti scavati soprattutto fra la seconda metà del XIX e la prima metà del XX secolo. In particolare la Siria, l'Anatolia e l'Iran forniscono la possibilità di seguire un itinerario che parte dalle prime scoperte agli scavi ancora in corso, in una sequenza quasi ininterrotta che occupa più di un secolo d'indagini archeologiche legate agli sviluppi metodologici e politici interni a ciascuna regione. SILVIA FESTUCCIA è docente di Archeologia e Storia dell'Arte del Vicino Oriente Antico all'Università degli Studi Suor Orsola Benincasa di Napoli. È membro della Missione Archeologica Italiana ad Ebla (Siria) dal 1992 e della Missione Archeologica Italiana a Monastiraki (Creta) dal 2007. Autrice di studi riguardanti l'urbanistica e la metallurgia del Vicino Oriente, ha partecipato a convegni internazionali e pubblicato vari contributi attinenti a scavi archeologici diretti in Italia e all'Estero.
