A comienzos del siglo XX, y gracias al empeño de don Ramón Menéndez Pidal, vio la luz la primera edición crítica de la capital obra de Alfonso X Estoria de España, publicada en dos volúmenes bajo el título de Primera Crónica General que mandó componer Alfonso el Sabio y se continúa bajo Sancho IV en 1289 (Madrid, 1906). De ella, se realizarían con el tiempo dos reimpresiones (en 1955 y 1977), con materiales complementarios añadidos. Pero ¿qué es en realidad la Primera Crónica General? Hoy sabemos que el texto editado por Menéndez Pidal se corresponde con los códices E1 y E2, ( E1, manuscrito Y-I-2 y E2, manuscrito X-I-4) de la biblioteca de San Lorenzo de El Escorial, esto es: una combinación de la conocida como Versión primitiva (hasta Pelayo) más la Versión amplificada sanchina (con interpolaciones), con el añadido final de la tardía Crónica particular de San Fernando ( CPSF). Concluye pues con el reinado de Fernando III. La CPSF fue compuesta a finales del reinado de Fernando IV (1295-1312), inspirada en la Vida de San Luis de Joinville (1309). Es una glorificación de las virtudes guerreras de Fernando III al que se le califica por primera vez en una fuente escrita con santo y aporta información sobre el cerco y conquista de Sevilla. Su tomo I, cuya edición se presenta, consta de casi 800 páginas. Ha sido digitalizado por la Biblioteca Digital de Castilla y León. No se edita el tomo II, en el que Menéndez Pidal analiza las fuentes que manejó, e incorpora una versión de la Estoria con el añadido de la Crónica de don Juan Manuel.
