"Prince and Heretic" is a historical novel about the Dutch House of Orange and begins with its prince, William. William the Silent, also known as William the Taciturn, or, more commonly, William of Orange, was the main leader of the Dutch Revolt against the Spanish Habsburgs that set off the Eighty Years' War and resulted in the formal independence of the United Provinces in 1581. The novel is set in the time of the Holy Inquisition when tensions between the Catholic and Protestant churches dominated. It is full of court intrigues, mysteries, political tensions, and unexpected turns.

Excerpt from Falstaff and His Companions Crown Prince, in order to divert from himself the jealousy of his suspicious father, he had played a part like Brutus, spending his time idly and among loose companions; and that after he had ascended the throne they were ban ished from his presence. History knows nothing of this; but shows us the Prince in the service of his father, and performing his part as a good soldier, doing his best in slaughter and devas tation, like all the other heroes of his time. He had also as a friend in his youth a person seriously disposed, whose very presence repelled all frivolity. This man was Sir John Oldcastle, who is known to us as having afterwards suffered martyrdom as a follower of the reformed doctrine of Wycliffe. The Prince, after he had become king, fell outwith him on this account; and Sir John was handed over by the Church to suffer the cruelest death of a heretic. The Faith Of A Heretic written by Walter A. Kaufmann and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-09 with Philosophy categories.

Originally published in 1959, The Faith of a Heretic is the most personal statement of the beliefs of Nietzsche biographer and translator Walter Kaufmann. A first-rate philosopher in his own right, Kaufmann here provides the fullest account of his views on religion. Although he considered himself a heretic, he was not immune to the wellsprings and impulses from which religion originates, declaring it among the most vital and radical expressions of the human mind. Beginning with an autobiographical prologue that traces his evolution from religious believer to "heretic," the book touches on theology, organized religion, morality, suffering, and death—all examined from the perspective of a "quest for honesty." Kaufmann also subjects philosophy's faith in truth, reason, and absolute morality to the same heretical treatment. The resulting exploration of the faiths of a nonbeliever in a secular age is as fresh and challenging as when it was first published. In a new foreword, Stanley Corngold vividly describes the intellectual and biographical milieu of Kaufmann’s provocative book.

Heretics And Heroes written by Thomas Cahill and has been published by Anchor this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-29 with History categories.

From the inimitable bestselling author Thomas Cahill, another popular history—this one focusing on how the innovations of the Renaissance and the Reformation changed the Western world. A truly revolutionary book. In Volume VI of his acclaimed Hinges of History series, Thomas Cahill guides us through the thrilling period of the Renaissance and the Reformation (the late fourteenth to the early seventeenth century), so full of innovation and cultural change that the Western world would not experience its like again until the twentieth century. Beginning with the continent-wide disaster of the Black Death, Cahill traces the many developments in European thought and experience that served both the new humanism of the Renaissance and the seemingly abrupt religious alterations of the increasingly radical Reformation. This is an age of the most sublime artistic and scientific adventure, but also of newly powerful princes and armies and of newly found courage, as many thousands refuse to bow their heads to the religious pieties of the past. It is an era of just-discovered continents and previously unknown peoples. More than anything, it is a time of individuality in which a whole culture must achieve a new balance if the West is to continue.
