Sleeping Beauty – Origins of the Fairy Tale from around the World' contains seven different versions of the 'Sleeping Beauty' story. It includes an in-depth introduction to the fairy tale genre itself, as well as the folkloric provenance of 'Sleeping Beauty'. It includes 'Sun, Moon and Talia' by Giambattista Basile, 'La Belle au Bois Dormant' by Charles Perrault, the tale of 'Briar Rose' by the Brothers Grimm and the Ancient Egyptian legend of 'The Doomed Prince'. What is a fairy tale? The 'Origins of Fairy Tales from around the World' series helps to answer this question, by showcasing the amazing breath and diversity involved in classic fairy tales. It focuses on the unusual phenomenon that the same tales, with only minor variations, appear again and again in different cultures – across time and geographical space. Traditionally told as short stories for children, and for adults too, these popular fairy tales will be sure to delight both young and old. Beautifully illustrated, these story books combine the best story-telling, with the best art-work, in order that the two may be fully appreciated.

All the stories about Princes and Princesses in this book are true stories; and were written by Mrs. Lang; out of old books of history. There are some children who make life difficult by saying; first that stories about fairies are true; and that they like fairies; and next that they do not like true stories about real people; who lived long ago. I am quite ready to grant that there really are such things as fairies; because; though I never saw a fairy; any more than I have seen the little animals which lecturers call molecules and ions; still I have seen people who have seen fairies—truthful people. Now I never knew a lecturer who ventured to say that he had seen an ion or a molecule. It is well known; and written in a true book; that the godmother of Joan of Arc had seen fairies; and nobody can suppose that such a good woman would tell her godchild what was not true—for example; that the squire of the parish was in love with a fairy and used to meet her in the moonlight beneath a beautiful tree. In fact; if we did not believe in fairy stories; who would care to read them? Yet only too many children dislike to read true stories; because the people in them were real; and the things actually happened.

More than two dozen traditional stories from Scandinavia, France, Russia, and beyond, with an enlightening introduction by two folklorists. Alfred David and Mary Elizabeth Meek have compiled a collection of fairy tales that ranges from the Grimm brothers’ inimitable recreations of archetypal folktales to the modern prose charm of James Thurber’s Many Moons. The appeal of the stories is wide and varied: the refined intelligence of Perrault, the wondrous imagination of Andersen, the descriptive power of Ruskin, the bittersweet melancholy of Wilde. These are but a few of the artists represented in this remarkably inclusive selection of works from Germany, Russia, France, Scandinavia, England, and America. Many are in new translations in the modern idiom and all testify eloquently to the unceasing vitality of this literary genre.
