This study examines United States public school principals' job satisfaction by region and several other context factors including principals' gender, school level and school location. The purpose of this study is to identify significant context factors that might make a difference to principal job satisfaction for all public schools in the United States. Educational research clearly posits principals support student achievement and teacher effectiveness, and so this study's exploration of influencing context factors related to principal job satisfaction is timely, relevant, and necessary. A sample of US public school principals is from the 2015-16 National Teachers and Principals Survey (NTPS) principal data that was collected by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). This study will apply one-way ANOVA to compare principal job satisfaction between the four regions and then apply two-way ANOVA to further compare principal job satisfaction by region and one of the three context factors (principal gender, school level, and school location). At publication, this study is the first comprehensive research of United States public school principals' job satisfaction by region and by region with specific independent variables tied to contextual relevance. The findings will have implications for principal retention, and for the design of current and future professional development action plans for building administrators, school continuous improvement plans and higher education leadership studies for aspiring principals.

When a school includes special education students in the general education classroom, it impacts all staff, teachers, and students. The purpose of this study was to consider inclusion of high school special education students in general education classrooms from the perspectives of principals, general education teachers, and special education teachers. From these perspectives, best practices for inclusion, supports and barriers to inclusion, and the principal's role as a change agent when implementing inclusion was investigated.Eighty-eight high schools following a 9-12 grade configuration in Long Island, New York were surveyed. Surveys were sent to the principal, general education teachers, and special education teachers at each of those schools. The surveys collected demographic data and addressed the four constructs that are measures of a successful inclusion program: (1) Principal's Role, (2) Organizational Support, (3) Best Practices and (4) Barriers.SPSS software was utilized to compute the data collected from the surveys. A factorial ANOVA was utilized. Four dependent variables: (1) Principal's Role, (2) Organizational Support, (3) Best Practices and (4) Barriers were constructed corresponding to the four constructs measured by the survey. All three groups were in agreement regarding best practices and barriers; however, neither teacher group was in agreement with the principals group with regards to the principal's role and organizational support.

The School District of Philadelphia (SDP), like many other urban school districts, struggles to increase its hiring and retention of experienced and highly qualified teachers in its low-performing/high-need schools. Toward the goal of improving teacher quality and the experience balance, particularly in hard-to-staff schools, the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers (PFT) and SDP agreed to a set of innovative approaches in their 2004 contract. That contract included new policies for school-based selection of teachers and the provision of incentives for teachers who seek employment in selected "incentive schools," in selected subjects, and to teachers new to the district's schools. Although similar hiring and/or incentive policies have been used elsewhere, little is known about the role that districts and principals play in implementing these policies and how they affect teacher recruitment and overall teacher quality. The Urban Education Collaborative (UEC) at Temple University's Institute for Schools and Society conducted a study of SDP's effort to implement these new policies during 2005-06. This study reports, in particular, on how SDP's principals responded to the district's newly created district hiring and incentive policies. With the assistance of SDP Human Resources Department and the cooperation of PFT, UEC sent web-based surveys to all SDP principals and to a sample of 1,000 teachers who had recently changed schools, were new to SDP, and were hired through site-based selection. Of the targeted teachers, only 177 responded to the survey, making data useful only for identifying themes for further exploration in interviews. In contrast, 207 principals, 77% of the SDP's total, responded. In order to understand more about the nature of policy implementation, supports, strengths, and weaknesses, a randomized sample of survey participants--10 principals, 9 experienced teachers, and 9 new teachers--were interviewed. Overall, the findings suggest positive steps forward for SDP in communicating and supporting the new policies. However, the findings also reflect different needs and responses of principals according to experience level, suggesting a need for customized information and training. What is especially striking is how few principals were proactive in using teacher hiring to improve teacher quality at their schools. They made limited use of web-based information, tracking of candidates, and communication. They did not "pitch" incentives to interested candidates, and many ceded hiring decisions to the central office rather than make use of site selection. The study suggests that limited policy impacts resulted from lack of buy-in and accountability for implementation among principals. While the latter can be explained, in part, by a centralized hiring system that often makes accountability ambiguous, the former is not well explained by either the quality of the policies or the means by which they were communicated. Rather, principal dispositions affected their enthusiasm for and implementation of the innovations and incentives in teacher hiring. How such values emerge and are responded to remain important questions for policy implementation. (Contains 7 figures, 4 tables and 11 footnotes.) This dissertation explored a growing concern - the lack of retention of early career teachers (ECTs). We investigated the perceptions of a large sample of ECTs regarding how principal support and job satisfaction affects their decisions to remain in or leave the field of education. We employed an exploratory mixed approach based on a framework derived from DiPaola's (2012) work on principal support. Three surveys collected ECTs' perceptions of principal support, job satisfaction, and their intention to remain in teaching. A series of semi-structured focus group interviews were also used to collect data from ECTs across four school-level configurations in both high and low socioeconomic school settings. Findings revealed ECTs' preferences of different kinds of support from their principals. Although preferences for support did not vary among ECT in different grade level school configurations, there were significant differences in preferences of the kinds of support between teachers in schools with high socioeconomic characteristics versus those in low socioeconomic schools. Strong positive correlations were found between ECT's perceptions of support and their job satisfaction. High levels of ECT's job satisfaction were found to be significant indicators of their intention to remain in the teaching profession. Additionally, principal perceptions of how they support their ECT were compared to the actual perceptions of ECTs. Findings indicate that school socioeconomic factors have the greatest impact on perceptions, teachers value different types of support based on school configuration, and principals and teachers have similar perceptions. The study recommends a differentiated approach to principal support based on socioeconomic factors and, to a limited degree, school performance.

The basis of this study was to give each of three different school districts one of the three different surveys. A step-by-step timeline of the process this researcher used up until data collection is included to be helpful for others in analyzing this study and replicating it. This quantitative analysis explored perceptions teachers have about their principals leadership styles, transformational qualities, and job satisfaction as may be influenced by gender, years of experience and retention. Surveys were given from an online survey website to participating schools. Data was then collected and analyzed. Seven research questions attempted to answer questions from the actual surveys using three researcher-added independent variables and subscale breakdown scores. The intent of this meta-analysis was to help clarify and add to the existing depth of knowledge. A variety of statistical analyses were used to determine if differences existed between the independent variables relating to summary statistics, significances, and subs-scale breakdown. The three independent variables, added by this researcher, in many cases show differences in perceptions and subscale breakdown information. The main findings of this study indicate: 1. Gender of principal influences teacher perceptions. 2. Teacher Years of Experience influences their perceptions. 3. Retention of teachers is important for school districts regarding cost.
