La pubblicazione si propone come obiettivo di esplorare le condizioni culturali e le forme del pensiero che hanno portato a esiti architettonici, esecutivi e strutturali di grande valore. L'analisi dei più significativi lavori dello studio Conzett Bronzini Gartmann è occasione per rendere conto del peculiare rapporto che si è andato stabilendo nel contesto svizzero tra pensiero sulla forma e considerazioni sulla struttura. Un saggio introduttivo mette in risalto gli aspetti e le questioni disciplinari che rendono particolarmente interessante il lavoro dello studio: la qualità architettonica e al contempo strutturale dei progetti; la molteplicità di linguaggi, di contesti, di scale, che permettono di offrire un'ampia panoramica sulla produzione architettonica attuale in Svizzera; la varietà delle collaborazioni, che coprono tre generazioni di architetti -la generazione dei maestri più anziani, tra i quali Peter Zumthor, la generazione di mezzo con Valerio Olgiati, e la generazione dei giovani emergenti - infine, il rapporto tra contesto locale (lo studio ha sede a Coira e nei Grigioni ha forti relazioni) e livello nazionale delle collaborazioni. I progetti sono introdotti da un testo scritto dall'architetto con cui lo studio ha di volta in volta collaborato, in cui si intrecciano descrizione della forma e dei principi strutturali. Disegni tecnici, appositamente predisposti per il volume, permettono di esplicitare graficamente i principi statici e costruttivi alla base di ogni opera nel tentativo di definire un terreno a metà strada tra rappresentazione della forma e schematizzazione strutturale. Due interviste, a Peter Zumthor e a Jürg Conzett, competano il volume.

The European Union's history exhibits numerous episodes in which Member States have sought to re-enforce their national autonomy in the face of deepening integration. Efforts to re-gain autonomy, however, are often accompanied by legitimate concerns that autonomy will lead to dis-integration or will have wider destructive consequences. The EU thus faces a dilemma. Calls for autonomy cannot all be dismissed as mere populist rhetoric or national egoism but instead represent a legitimate questioning of the degree of uniformity that EU law and politics presently carry. At the same time, the fear that greater autonomy may carry dis-integrative effects is also legitimate -uniformity is not an accidental by-product of the EU's construction but intrinsically related to its policy goals. Giving too much room for autonomy might create an opportunity structure for the loss of collective goods, deficits in problem-solving, and perhaps even to self-destruction. The EU requires autonomy, but in doing so, it must also avoid collapse. Can it achieve it, and if so, how? Autonomy without Collapse is devoted to exploring innovative answers to this question. It draws together scholars in law and political science interested in exploring how to overcome the central dilemma of preserving sustainable yet real autonomy in the future European Union.
