"Me propongo escribir en su conjunto la sociología del derecho civil, labor todavía no intentada. Hasta el presente apenas se ha ocupado nadie más que de la sociología general, y aún hay quienes niegan la existencia de las sociologías parciales, estimando que la sociología pura y simple, única que sería real, consiste precisamente en generalizar todo lo que puede ser susceptible de generalización en las diversas Ciencias sociales. Creemos que esto es un error: que al lado de la sociología general hay más de una sociología parcial, que no por esto deja de ser por sí misma una verdadera sociología. La sociedad tiene diversos aspectos, bajo cada uno de los cuales puede ser sucesivamente considerada, antes o después de un examen simultáneo y estereoscópico. Sin embargo, si hasta ahora no se ha construido la sociología civil ni ninguna de las sociologías jurídicas, de todas partes se han traído materiales para edificarlas: materiales que no son simples hechos históricos o conglomerados estadísticos, sino que también consisten en numerosos datos, ya en el espacio, por los estudios de la legislación comparada, bien en el tiempo, por las investigaciones del origen de las instituciones.
