Excerpt from Principles of Worsted Spinning The object of this book is not to give a mass of data of a type that might be used in circumstances fixed by arbitrary rules, but to attempt to formulate the principles that underlie the many complicated processes involved in Worsted Spinning. Data and full particulars of up-to-date machines are given for each process, but they are there to show how far the writer's theories may be made to fit with facts, as they exist. The figures as they stand are those suggested by Prince Smith & Sons. They may be taken as an illustration of the fact that in this book there has been no attempt to make existing practice fit with theory, unless it can be done consistently. No one must ever look upon the figures or the theories as things of any value in themselves, but only as a means by which all kinds of men with different equipment, different means, may reach a common end. The value of all theories will be most to those who check each one by observation, on their own machines; for it is pointed out that those who prove that any well-accepted theory is quite incorrect will do themselves the greatest service, because they then will be in full position to avoid the errors of their neighbours. Excerpt from Woollen Spinning: A d104-Book for Students in Technical Schools and Colleges, and for Skillful Practical Men in Woollen Mills A text-book on Woollen Spinning suitable for students in Technical Schools and Colleges, as well as for skilful practical men in our woollen mills, has long been much wanted 3 but the retrograde position into which the woollen industry has drifted during late years accentuates this long-felt want, and calls for a text-book that shall restate the principles that underlie the earlier processes of the manufacture. Woollen goods were two-thirds of England's exports at the beginning of the eighteenth century, and down to the middle of the century it was the leading industry, but it was about this time outstripped in the race by the cotton manufacture. The woollen, however, made good progress during the latter half of the last century, and held its position fairly well up to the middle of the present century, since which it has fallen very considerably into the rear. Excerpt from Spinning Woollen and Worsted: Being a Practical Treatise for the Use of All Persons, Engaged in These Trades The design of this Manual is to describe in a concise form the principles of worsted and woollen spinning, as exemplified in the machinery employed in the various processes of those trades. There are many spinners, both masters and workmen, who know their business without having paid much attention to the reasons why the different processes are employed to produce required results; and there are probably still more who do their work by rule of thumb, and never take the trouble to make the exact calculations which are really required. No better example of this can be found than the way in which wool is generally washed, without any regard to what is best for it, but merely with a view to cheapness and obtaining a good colour. That this arises from ignorance of the structure and nature of wool is most probable, and therefore a considerable amount of space has been devoted to this branch of the subject. To those who desire to know the reasons for what they are doing, and to have in a convenient form the rules for all the calculations they require; it is hoped this book may be useful; while to those who are not actually spinners, but who desire to have an insight into the trade, it may prove clear and instructive. Excerpt from Principles of Wool Combing IN preparing this book it has been my chief object to arrange facts and statistics in such a way that the figures shall not be merely lists of dimensions and speeds, but that they shall help to explain the value of each working part, in the theory and practice of wool combing. Excerpt from Kinks on Wool Carding and Spinning The editors of the textile world record are at all times face to face with the problem of securing practical information. For years its subscribers have been invited to make free use of its columns in asking questions relating to woolen manufacturing, and it occurred to us that if some of the most important and most interesting of the practical questions that have been answered were gathered together in a handy form for quick reference, it would meet a wide-spread want. This book contains information which has been supplied by manufacturers, superintend ents, and overseers from their private record books and their stores of knowledge gained by experience. Many questions are answered and much information given, but subscribers should remember that if there is any information they desire which is not given in this volume.
