Printemps mortel relate les amours tragiques d'un jeune Hongrois du début du siècle. Nous sommes à Budapest dans une ville qui est à son apogée culturel et artistique mais où apparaissent les premiers symptômes de la fin de l'Empire austro-hongrois. Chaque pays exprime par sa littérature les mythes, les attitudes, la mystique, les stéréotypes, réels ou souhaités, d'un peuple, d'une classe sociale, d'une jeunesse. Voici, dans ce bref roman, les passions violentes et mortelles, les extases et le désespoir, les énergies indomptables, si propres au peuple magyar. Un jeune homme de trente ans, follement épris d'Edit, fille d'un général de l'armée hongroise, se croit trahi. Blessé à vif par un cynisme dont il ignorait l'existence, il se livre au démon du jeu, qui finira par engloutir sa fortune. Cependant, consolé par un nouvel amour, il est sur le point de se marier lorsque parvient une lettre d'Edit, qui déclare l'avoir toujours aimé. Incapable de prendre une décision, le héros se rend sur les rives du Danube. Du mont Gellért à l'île Marguerite il parcourt du regard la ville embrasée par le crépuscule, puis s'enferme dans une chambre d'hôtel et rédige, sous forme de lettre, sa confession à un ami d'enfance reconnu quelques heures auparavant dans le hall... Printemps mortel est le roman qui rendit Zilahy célèbre. Traduit en italien dès les années trente, puis en anglais et en allemand, il est resté, autant que son chef-d'œuvre Két fogoly (Les deux prisonniers), jusqu'à présent inédit en France, où l'on a pourtant redécouvert Zilahy il y a trois ans, avec sa saga des Dukay. Riche en détails sur la " bonne société de l'époque ", son ton exalté et son romantisme n'ont pas peu contribué à son succès auprès d'un vaste public.
