Excerpt from Printing in the Fifteenth Century This was the srtuat10n in the Rhine Valley when a young man of good family and comfortable means got himself into trouble at Mainz and had to leave home, leaving also' his property in the control of those unfriendly to him. He settled in the neighboring city of Strassburg, where he man aged to live respectably for more than twenty years. Throughout this period he was able to borrow more money than he was ever able to repay. Some of this was loaned to him in order to participate in something that he was doing that was highly speculative, and which at least once yielded a satisfactory return. What his scheme was is not known with demonstrable certainty, because he was uncannily suc cessful in concealing what he was doing from prying neigh bors. Not once did any unmistakable hint get itself recorded during his lifetime on any piece of paper that has since been found. Hopelessly in debt toward the end of his life, he was given a smecure by the local ruler for services ren dered, but nothing was put on the record to suggest what the services to the state or the community had'been. Excerpt from The Printing of Greek in the Fifteenth Century I cannot let this book go forth without an apology to my readers, in that I have ventured to attempt a work dealing to a very large extent with technical details, without that knowledge of printing which can only be acquired by practical experience. In this respect I owe much to the kindness of Mr Horace Hart, the Controller of the Oxford University Press, who made many obscure points clear to me by ocular demonstration. The greatest care has been taken to make the illustrations facsimiles as exact as possible; but it will often be found that minute indications to which I have drawn attention in the text are not visible in the reproductions. I must ask those who wish to study the matter closely to turn to the originals in these instances, and to remember that in the first printed books Greek type generally printed with an exceptional lack of sharpness, and that since even the best process blocks magnify and harden any defect due to imperfection of inking or presswork, while they almost always thicken the lines to some extent, the appearance of the type is sometimes materially altered. Mr E. Gordon Duff gave me valuable help with the unique books in the John Rylands Library, especially in connexion with the photograph from the Batrachomuomachia shown in plate VII. To him, and to the other friends by whose knowledge and advice I have profited, my best thanks are due. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Printing: Its Birth and Growth To the general question, When was printing invented? The average man answers, In the fifteenth century, or thereabouts, for so inferior school-books and cyclopaedias teach, without reservation. The average individual is much too apathetic to question what he sees in cold print, or to search in more reliable quarters for the origin of the various arts and sciences. So, touching the art which gives him his education and religion, which affords oft-times his living, and (too rarely) his recreation, the individual is either supremely oblivious or heedless of its real source. He knows not (and cares less) that the magic art was employed in primitive form by the ancients; so long ago, indeed, that the fifteenth century is but as a kind of yesterday. For over nine centuries the Chinese have practised printing by means of engraved pear-tree blocks, and in most parts of that empire to-day the natives prefer their old-fashioned method to the European manner. It is thought that they invented in the twelfth or thirteenth century moveable types of clay or wood, as Corean books dated I3I7 still exist, printed by means of such instruments. Excerpt from A Descriptive Catalogue of the Books Printed in the Fifteenth Century For the fourth and last time I present myself to the Public, as connected with the magnificent Library, the treasures of which are in part disclosed in the present and six preceding volumes. The Noble Owner of these treasures might have been well satisfied in setting all competition at defiance, even before he had made himself master of the Collection, which now, under the title of The Cassano Library, for the first time, claims the public attention. But his zeal, taste, and liberal spirit, in the prosecution of that pursuit to which he has devoted the last thirty-five years of his life, forbade him to decline the acceptance of an offer, by which the riches of his Collection might be said to be increased even to repletion. In the years 1819-20, during his Lordship's tour on the Continent, The Duke Di Cassano Serra, a nobleman highly distinguished at Naples for his ardour and perseverance in book-collecting - proposed to him the purchase of his own (the Duke's) Collection. Excerpt from A List of Books Printed in the Fifteenth Century in the John Carter Brown Library and the General Library of Brown University Providence Rhode Island The 542 volumes in the Hawkins Collection illustrate the work of 'the first printers', the men who set up the printing press in communities all over Europe where none had existed before, during the half-century preceding the year 1501. Many of the more important of the books listed on the following pages were purchased at the suggestion of General Hawkins, as specimens of the work of these men in whom he was so keenly interested. As they are now housed within a few hundred feet of his Memorial to Mrs. Hawkins, it seemed desirable to provide students of the history of printing with the titles of all the early printed books which can be seen in the libraries at Providence. Excerpt from Titles of the First Books From the Earliest Presses Established in Different Cities, Towns, and Monasteries in Europe: Before the End of the Fifteenth Century, With Brief Notes Upon Their Printers H. Hessels, in his book lately published under the title of Gutenberg, Was He the Inventor of Printing I am compelled to place at the head of the list of printers with movable metal types the name of John Guten berg. While admitting that an introduction to a work like this may not afford an appropriate occasion for an argument in favor of any particular theory, I think it proper to give a brief summary of some of the facts and reasons which are the foundations of my belief in the Gutenberg claim. I also regard the book of Mr. Hessels as a challenge to all who take the German side of this question. His gauntlet is thrown in such a manner that those who write upon a subject germane to the one great question incidentally involved in this work are compelled to notice it; and as I have, without qualification, given Gutenberg the first place in the history of this most useful art, I feel called upon to set forth, in outline merely, some of the principal reasons which to me seem to support his claim to be the inventor of printing. The Cambridge Companion To Renaissance Humanism written by Jill Kraye and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-02-23 with History categories.

From the fourteenth to the seventeenth century, humanism played a key role in European culture. Beginning as a movement based on the recovery, interpretation and imitation of ancient Greek and Roman texts and the archaeological study of the physical remains of antiquity, humanism turned into a dynamic cultural programme, influencing almost every facet of Renaissance intellectual life. The fourteen essays in this 1996 volume deal with all aspects of the movement, from language learning to the development of science, from the effect of humanism on biblical study to its influence on art, from its Italian origins to its manifestations in the literature of More, Sidney and Shakespeare. A detailed biographical index, and a guide to further reading, are provided. Overall, The Cambridge Companion to Renaissance Humanism provides a comprehensive introduction to a major movement in the culture of early modern Europe.
