Dabei war er in vielen persönlichen Lebensentscheidungen seiner Zeit voraus: Als Priester trat er für die Einheit der Ostkirchen mit der Westkirche auf Augenhöhe ein und wurde vom Papst gemaßregelt. Im Ersten Weltkrieg erlebte er als Feldgeistlicher Kriegsgreuel, wurde ein bekennender Pazifist und deshalb vom König mit Aufenthaltsbeschränkungen belegt. Ihm waren die Ideale der Lebensreform-Bewegung nahe, er war Vegetarier, Antialkoholiker und ein Gegner des Rauchens. Die längste Zeit seines Lebens verbrachte Prinz Max als Professor in Fribourg (Schweiz). Seine materielle Bescheidenheit und seine Hilfsbereitschaft allen Notleidenden gegenüber führten dazu, dass nicht wenige Einwohner nach seinem Tod davon überzeugt waren, mit einem Heiligen zusammengelebt zu haben. Elf Essays beleuchten Leben, Wirken und Nachwirkungen dieses hochinteressanten Wettiners. Die Abbildungen zeigen unter anderem persönliche Gegenstände, Fotos und Schriftstücke aus seinem Nachlass.

Church leaders and their contrasting opinions in the face of the Great War Cardinal Désiré-Joseph Mercier, Archbishop of Malines, was the incarnation of the Belgian resistance against the German occupation during the First World War. With his famous pastoral letter of Christmas 1914 ‘Patriotisme et Endurance’ he reached a wide audience, and gained international influence and respect. Mercier’s distinct patriotic stance clearly determined his views of national politics, especially of the 'Flemish question', and his conflict with the German occupier made him a hero of the Allies. The Germans did not always know how to handle this influential man of the Church. Pope Benedict XV did not always approve of the course of action adopted by the Belgian prelate. Whereas Mercier justified the war effort as a just cause in view of the restoration of Belgium's independence, the Pope feared that "this useless massacre" meant nothing but the "suicide of civilized Europe”. Through a critical analysis of the policies of Cardinal Mercier and Pope Benedict XV, this book sheds revealing light on the contrasting positions of Church leaders in the face of the Great War.

Red Saxony throws new light on the reciprocal relationship between political modernization and authoritarianism in Germany over the span of six decades. Election battles were fought so fiercely in Imperial Germany because they reflected two kinds of democratization. Social democratization could not be stopped, but political democratization was opposed by many members of the German bourgeoisie. Frightened by the electoral success of the Social Democrats after 1871, anti-democrats deployed many strategies that flew in the face of electoral fairness. They battled socialists, liberals, and Jews at election time, but they also strove to rewrite the electoral rules of the game. Using a regional lens to rethink older assumptions about Germany's changing political culture, this volume focuses as much on contemporary Germans' perceptions of electoral fairness as on their experiences of voting. It devotes special attention to various semi-democratic voting systems whereby a general and equal suffrage (for the Reichstag) was combined with limited and unequal ones for local and regional parliaments. For the first time, democratization at all three tiers of governance and their reciprocal effects are considered together. Although the bourgeois face of German authoritarianism was nowhere more evident than in the Kingdom of Saxony, Red Saxony illustrates how other Germans grew to fear the spectre of democracy. Although twists and turns lay ahead, that fear made it easier for Hitler and the Nazis to win elections in the 1920s and to entomb German democracy in 1933.
