Die Frage nach der Tauglichkeit dessen, was in der Politischen Wissenschaft und in der politischen Praxis Nation genannt wird, bildete den Ausgangspunkt für diese Arbeit. Als Deutscher kommt man weder an einer bestimmten Vergangenheit vorbei, die eine moralische Hypothek hinterlassen hat, noch an einer Gegenwart, die durch das Stich wort Teilung gekennzeichnet ist. Nimmt man (als "Betroffener" sozusagen) sich der vorbelasteten Sache Nation - weder apologetisch, noch affirmativ, noch anklagend, sondern analytisch - an, so verwundert, daß die Fragwürdigkeit der Nation in einem theoretischen Rahmen auch in Deutschland kaum zur Sprache gebracht wird. So gibt es ein Forschungsdesiderat bezüglich einer Theorie der Nation, obwohl es eine Biblio theken füllende literatur zu "Nationalem" und "Deutschem" gibt, die in den letzten Jahren nochmals sehr erweitert wurde. Die oberi angegenbene Frage ist als Aufgabe aufgenommen worden zu untersuchen, ob angesichts der trans-, supra-, inter- und multinationalen Herausforderungen der Na tion als politischer Kategorie noch ein realer Sachverhalt entspricht. Würde mit der gesamten Untersuchung eine Rehabilitierung dieser keineswegs unproblematischen Kategorie erreicht, so wäre eine nüchterne, weitere Diskussion der nationalen Frage in Deutschland, vielleicht auch in hier angedeuteten Ausmaßen, wün schenswert. Einen Erkenntniszuwachs gerade für die deutsche Frage zu erreichen, ist mit der Untersuchung angestrebt. Um den Wirklichkeitsaspekt Nation zu erfassen, werden Defmitionen riskiert, li nien über das eigene Fach hinaus gezogen und Thesen formuliert, die deutlich (und diskutabel) markieren sollen, wie das Untersuchungsfeld vermessen, das Problem "en cadriert" wird.

Spain is often referred to as a nation of nations. Ethnocultural differences between the Castilian majority and the Basques, Catalans and Galicians have always been an important issue in Spain. The dual process of state-building and nation-building is of fundamental importance to the territorial structure and the national identities. Spain's way of dealing with the question of nationalities may also be interesting for other European states.
