Der schwedische Filmregisseur Ingmar Bergman (1918-2007) und der russische Filmemacher Andrej Tarkowskij (1932-1986) zählen zu den renommiertesten Filmkünstlern der Welt, und ihre Werke wurden mit zahlreichen internationalen Preisen ausgezeichnet. Im Buch werden die beiden Persönlichkeiten und ihr künstlerisches Werk vielseitig betrachtet und ihre Ansichten über das Leben und die Kunst sowie ihre künstlerische Prinzipien miteinander verglichen. Dabei werden die Eigenheiten der Arbeitsmethoden von Bergman und Tarkowskij und ihr Einfluss aufeinander herausgearbeitet. Am Beispiel ausgewählter Filme Bergmans und Tarkowskijs wird die fundamentale Problematik ihrer Arbeit offengelegt und darüber reflektiert. Anhand inhaltlicher, ästhetischer und textueller Aspekte der untersuchten Filmwerke werden Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschiede sowohl in Bezug auf die künstlerischen Konzepte als auch auf die Weltwahrnehmung beider Filmkünstler bestimmt. Dies wird parallel durch (auto-)biografische Quellen belegt, die nicht zuletzt ein besonderes Interesse beider Künstler aneinander zeigen. Im Anschluss daran werden zum ersten Mal wertvolle biografische Materialien übersetzt und präsentiert (etwa aus dem Tarkowskij-Archiv in Russland), die neue Fakten vom Künstler und seinem Leben vermitteln. Dabei wird vor allem über die konzeptuellen Elemente des Lebens und der Kunst beider Regisseure nachgedacht und gezeigt, welche Gesetze der Kunst und welche Prinzipien des Lebens sich in ihren Werken spiegeln.
