Privacy and data protection are recognized as fundamental human rights. Recent developments, however, indicate that security issues are used to undermine these fundamental rights. As new technologies effectively facilitate collection, storage, processing and combination of personal data government agencies take advantage for their own purposes. Increasingly, and for other reasons, the business sector threatens the privacy of citizens as well. The contributions to this book explore the different aspects of the relationship between technology and privacy. The emergence of new technologies threaten increasingly privacy and/or data protection; however, little is known about the potential of these technologies that call for innovative and prospective analysis, or even new conceptual frameworks. Technology and privacy are two intertwined notions that must be jointly analyzed and faced. Technology is a social practice that embodies the capacity of societies to transform themselves by creating the possibility to generate and manipulate not only physical objects, but also symbols, cultural forms and social relations. In turn, privacy describes a vital and complex aspect of these social relations. Thus technology influences people’s understanding of privacy, and people’s understanding of privacy is a key factor in defining the direction of technological development. This book was originally published as a special issue of Innovation: The European Journal of Social Science Research.

Privacy is a growing concern in the United States and around the world. The spread of the Internet and the seemingly boundaryless options for collecting, saving, sharing, and comparing information trigger consumer worries. Online practices of business and government agencies may present new ways to compromise privacy, and e-commerce and technologies that make a wide range of personal information available to anyone with a Web browser only begin to hint at the possibilities for inappropriate or unwarranted intrusion into our personal lives. Engaging Privacy and Information Technology in a Digital Age presents a comprehensive and multidisciplinary examination of privacy in the information age. It explores such important concepts as how the threats to privacy evolving, how can privacy be protected and how society can balance the interests of individuals, businesses and government in ways that promote privacy reasonably and effectively? This book seeks to raise awareness of the web of connectedness among the actions one takes and the privacy policies that are enacted, and provides a variety of tools and concepts with which debates over privacy can be more fruitfully engaged. Engaging Privacy and Information Technology in a Digital Age focuses on three major components affecting notions, perceptions, and expectations of privacy: technological change, societal shifts, and circumstantial discontinuities. This book will be of special interest to anyone interested in understanding why privacy issues are often so intractable.

In today's digital age, the protection of personal data is of paramount importance. With the increasing prevalence of data breaches and privacy violations, individuals and organizations are seeking effective solutions to safeguard sensitive information. This document explores the cutting-edge innovations in privacy protection, focusing on advanced technologies known as privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs). PETs encompass a diverse array of tools and methodologies designed to enhance privacy by minimizing data exposure, encrypting sensitive information, and enabling secure data sharing. Through a comprehensive examination of PETs, this document aims to provide insights into how these technologies can mitigate privacy risks and empower individuals to retain control over their personal data. From differential privacy and homomorphic encryption to federated learning and secure multi-party computation, the document delves into the principles and applications of various PETs, highlighting their potential to reshape the landscape of privacy protection. Furthermore, the document discusses the challenges associated with implementing PETs and provides recommendations for overcoming these obstacles. By presenting real-world case studies and examples of successful PET deployments across different sectors, this document illustrates the tangible benefits of integrating privacy-enhancing technologies into existing systems and processes. Ultimately, the document emphasizes the importance of ongoing innovation and collaboration in the development and adoption of PETs to address evolving privacy threats and uphold individual privacy rights in the digital era

It seems like there is no such thing as privacy anymore. But the truth is that privacy is in danger only because we think about it in narrow, limited, and outdated ways. In this transformative work, Ari Ezra Waldman, leveraging the notion that we share information with others in contexts of trust, offers a roadmap for data privacy that will better protect our information in a digitized world. With case studies involving websites, online harassment, intellectual property, and social robots, Waldman shows how 'privacy as trust' can be applied in the most challenging real-world contexts to make privacy work for all of us. This book should be read by anyone concerned with reshaping the theory and practice of privacy in the modern world.

Today's innovative technologies offer remarkable advantages to our daily lives, but they also give rise to concerns that these technology advancements will adversely impact individuals' privacy. The traditional notion of information privacy is based on personal control over data about oneself, which is an antiqued notion because current, pervasive surveillance has rendered it nearly impossible for individuals to protect information privacy on their own. The key privacy concerns arise because it is nearly impossible to be left out of the intertwined digital and internet world. For those who choose not to use the Internet, smartphones or tablet computers, electronic mail and online social network platforms, they remain trapped in the inescapable digital net, and others can use other tools to track their personal data. This dissertation includes suggestions for reconstructing the traditional privacy theories and case studies. The traditional notice-and-choice principle has failed to protect the information privacy. Privacy should be determined by both individuals' subjective feelings and objective social norms and that the government has a constitutional obligation to protect the right to privacy by constructing basic information privacy protection principles. Furthermore, this dissertation proposes the approach to constructing a social-value-oriented information privacy theory. Among others, in determining the context of privacy, if no social precedents are available, the particular social activity's consequences, purposes and values may first be identified, and then these results may be used to trace back to the starting point and consider how to regulate social activities.

Information and communication technology now enables firms to collect detailed and potentially intrusive data about their customers both easily and cheaply. This means that privacy concerns are no longer limited to government surveillance and public figures' private lives. The empirical literature on privacy regulation shows that privacy regulation may affect the extent and direction of data-based innovation. We also show that the impact of privacy regulation can be extremely heterogeneous. Therefore, we argue that digitization means that privacy policy is now a part of innovation policy.
