Menjadi orang tua dari Anak Berkebutuhan Khusus (ABK) tentu memiliki hak yang sama dalam berkehidupan sosial. Namun bagi sebagian besar mereka, hal itu bukanlah hal yang mudah. Stigma dan stereotip seringkali muncul dan ditujukan kepada Anak Berkebutuhan Khusus dan kepada para orang tuanya. Hal ini berakibat pada proses penarikan diri sebelum memutuskan untuk membuka atau menutup diri dalam berkomunikasi dengan lingkungannya. Level keterbukaan privasi seseorang tentu melibatkan kebijakan personal yang sama-sama memunculkan risiko besar (Petronio, 2008). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkapkan bagaimana manajemen privasi yang dilakukan oleh orang tua yang memiliki anak berkebutuhan khusus dalam berkomunikasi dengan lingkungannya. Metode yang digunakan adalah analisis deskriptif dan tahap pengumpulan data dilakukan berdasarkan wawancara mendalam dengan para informan. Penentuan informan dilakukan dengan metode purposive sampling dan snowball sampling. Keabsahan data diuji dengan triangulasi sumber dan analisis data secara interaktif. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa manajemen privasi yang dilakukan informan melalui beberapa tahapan mulai dari pengendalian privasi sampai dengan tahap keterbukaan. Meski demikian, lingkup privasi dan keterbukaan dari setiap informan penelitian ini juga tidak dapat digeneralisasikan. Hal ini dipengaruhi oleh beberapa faktor antara lain dukungan keluarga, tingkat self esteem, dan latar belakang ekonomi serta latar belakang pendidikan dari setiap informan.
