Literacy teaching tends to take a structural approach to language, focusing on auditory products or skills such as sounds, morphemes, words, sentences, and vocabulary. However, new research suggests that the majority of English speakers actually think and learn in visual concepts, and that there is a cultural and linguistic mismatch between auditory teaching methods and the way students think and learn. This has important implications for all educators including those who work with students with neurogenic disabilities, such as autism spectrum disorders and ADHD. In her new book, Dr. Ellyn Lucas Arwood outlines a revolutionary four-tiered model of how a learner acquires language, and suggests ways to impose visual language functions onto an auditory language like English in order to improve learning for both neurotypical learners and those with neurogenic disabilities. Dr. Arwood provides tried-and-tested intervention strategies that work with all levels of ability, giving readers the knowledge and confidence to teach learners to become more literate in a way that raises learners' abilities to think and problem solve. This book takes a fresh look at how language and literacy interact, and will be of interest to educators and special educators, speech and language pathologists, and other professionals who support language learning and development.

The behaviour of children within ages defined in most countries without regard to biological maturity or social usefulness is often concentrated on their failure and the failure of their carers to conform to what their societies expect of them. This study attempts to show that children and their carers are genetically and ethologically channelled into behaviour to support the small groups in which they live. For most of our known global history children have been seen as economic social and status assets to these small groups and their value assessed in proportion to their eventual contribution as adults. They are not taught to behave in contributory ways but are absorbed into their need to be useful in terms of all those with whom they associate. Cross culturally the growth of individualism and the decline of usefulness of children for their parents have led to pro social behaviour being much reduced to immediate benefits to children and for the small group in which they spend less and less time. Teaching children to be useful to an impersonal society in which they have little interest is an industry in modern states. Perhaps our conclusion must be that children will only behave in ways that their society deems correct when they sense on their own that it is profitable to do so. The ethical values which have historically maintained the necessary unity of the small group have faded with the growth of survival through secondary employment and state welfare provisions.

Handbook of Prosocial Education is the definitive theoretical, practical, and policy guide to the prosocial side of education, the necessary second side of the educational coin. Academic teaching and learning are the first side of education; however, academic success depends upon the structures and support of prosocial educational efforts from promoting positive school climate to fostering student and teacher development to civic literacy and responsible and critical citizenship participation. The Handbook of Prosocial Education chapters, written by highly-respected researchers and outstanding educators, represent the wide range of research-based prosocial interventions from pre-school through high school. The chapters explore and explain how prosocial education helps teachers create effective classroom learning environments to support the development of the whole student, principals encourage positive school climate, and superintendents work to improve the health and well-being of their systems. As readers will learn, when done well, prosocial education develops the capacities and competencies of students, teachers, and school administrators that lead to a more autonomous, positive self-concept, greater sense of purpose, more socially responsible behaviors, and increased connections between families, schools, and communities. This book pulls together in one place for the first time the various threads that create the prosocial education tapestry, making a compelling case for the necessity of changing national educational policy that continues to be ever-more oriented to only the academic side of the educational coin, thus jeopardizing the foundational and historic purpose of educating our children for their full human development and participation in our democracy.
