To get the job you have to be different from the other candidates. At the level we are at now there is no more room for amateurs and amateurism, it's time for professionalism and that's why every piece of information that can help you be a true professional in your field is an asset to you. We live in the age of communication and it is time to invest in other assets, in personal development. In assets that are portable, that we can take with us wherever we go and whatever we do. These assets are skills that make us special, they are the amount of investment we have made to change, to learn new things and to transform ourselves. The time that passes will never return. If you understand this then you realise how important this limited resource is. Choose to invest time every day in your personal development. Your partners or competitors are already doing this with maximum seriousness. Think of life as a constant battle over resources and the chances you get are also limited. You communicate to sell your image. You may not be fully aware of it, but it happens. The image you export is the image that brings you more prestige, more confidence and more success. Be proactive and improve that image every day.

This study explored how employees proactively responded to perceived communication problems and what employees considered when proactively responding. The study utilized semi-structured interviews to gather data, resulting in 15 interviews. The interviews were transcribed yielding 130 single-spaced pages of data. Template analysis was used to code the data for themes. This analysis was chosen because it allowed the researcher to utilize previously established literature to develop a codebook, which could then be modified on the data. The findings demonstrate that employees will enact many types of proactive behavior to correct perceived communication problems in an organization. Findings also demonstrated that participants often involved co-workers in their proactive behaviors. Altogether, findings support the notion that several factors may influence the proactive process.

Sharing common goals and acting cooperatively are critical issues in multi-agent teamwork. Traditionally, agents cooperate with each other by inferring others' actions implicitly or explicitly, based on established norms for behavior or on knowledge about the preferences or interests of others. This kind of cooperation either requires that agents share a large amount of knowledge about the teamwork, which is unrealistic in a distributed team, or requires high-frequency message exchange, which weakens teamwork efficiency, especially for a team that may involve human members. In this research, we designed and developed a new approach called Proactive Communication, which helps to produce realistic behavior and interactions for multi-agent teamwork. We emphasize that multi-agent teamwork is governed by the same principles that underlie human cooperation. Psychological studies of human teamwork have shown that members of an effective team often anticipate the needs of other members and choose to assist them proactively. Human team members are also naturally capable of observing the environment and others so they can establish certain parameters for performing actions without communicating with others. Proactive Communication endows agents with observabilities and enables agents use them to track others' mental states. Additionally, Proactive Communication uses statistical analysis of the information production and need of team members and uses these data to capture the complex, interdependent decision processes between information needer and provider. Since not all these data are known, we use their expected values with respect to a dynamic estimation of distributions. The approach was evaluated by running several sets of experiments on a Multi-Agent Wumpus World application. The results showed that endowing agents with observability decreased communication load as well as enhanced team performance. The results also showed that with the support of dynamic distributions, estimation, and decision-theoretic modeling, teamwork efficiency were improved.

As robots move from isolated industrial settings into everyday human environments, we need to consider how they should interact with people. Emerging applications range from delivery and support in warehouses, to home and social services. Compared to isolated workspaces, human environments impose more challenges. For example, in social navigation, the robot needs to reach its destination while avoiding people and navigating in a socially compliant way. However, human behaviors are usually complex, stochastic, and hard to predict, which creates difficulties for the robot to plan appropriate actions. To address these challenges, this thesis focuses on the use of simple, proactive haptic communication to facilitate interactions with humans in various scenarios. The core research idea is that, instead of reacting to humans in the environment, the robot should proactively use communication to exchange information and affect human behaviors. This thesis addresses the following topics: (1) the effects of communication on human behavior, (2) mathematical models that predict these effects and human actions, and (3) algorithms to plan for communications that improve efficiency and performance of the human-robot system. We study these topics in the context of three applications. We first present the design and application of a bidirectional communication scheme for a person-following robot. Then we discuss the use of implicit and explicit communication in a mobile robot social navigation scenario. Finally, we present methods for communicating directional information for human navigation guidance.
