En la presente investigacion el autor intenta demostrar que en la Lima del siglo XIX la contaminacion ambiental fue un tema de discusion y preocupacion entre los medicos, las autoridades municipales y la sociedad en general. Es la intencion del autor enfatizar la idea que el identificar al medioambiente como un factor determinante en la salud de los pobladores no es una preocupacion exclusiva de la actualidad, sino todo lo contrario, implica la restauracion de viejas ideas medicas que asociaban la salud de la persona con el medio ambiente que lo rodeaba. El texto desarrolla, desde una perspectiva historica, problemas como la distribucion del agua en las ciudades, el acceso al agua potable, la contaminacion del aire urbano y la limpieza de las calles y muestra como aunque el deterioro del medioambiente urbano no es una preocupacion exclusiva de la actualidad ha sido una preocupacion discontinua a lo largo de la historia.
