Das Buch soll einführen in die Hauptprobleme der internationalen Politik am Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts und zugleich in die Grundbegriffe ihrer Analyse. Ne ben einer breiten Grundinformation über die internationale Politik als For schungsgegenstand wird also zugleich über die Methoden der Internationalen Politik als der sie erforschenden Disziplin unterrichtet, denn: der politikwissen schaftliche Zugang zum Thema ist wesentlich ein methodenbewußter. Die Entstehung des Buches war von mehrfachen, umfangreichen Diskus sionsrunden im Lehrgebiet begleitet. Insofern ist das vorliegende Buch auch Resultat echter Teamarbeit. Gleichwohl gibt es eine klare autorielle Verantwor tung, die sich wie folgt verteilt: Martin List verfaßte die Kapitel 2, 3, 4.1.1 und 4.1.4, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 5.2 und 6; Maria Behrens schrieb das Kapitel 5.1; Wolfgang Reichardt verfaßte die Kapitel 4.1.2, 4.1.3 sowie das Kapitel 4.5, - ßerdem erstellte er die zahlreichen Abbildungen; Georg Simonis verfaßte das einleitende Kapitell. Das Buch behandelt - und zwar keineswegs vollständig - eine zwangsläufig sehr umfangreiche Materie. Das Lehrgebiet hat sich darum bemüht, sie einiger maßen "verdaubar" aufzubereiten. Doch, wie eine angelsächsische Redewen dung sagt: der Pudding beweist sich erst beim Essen.
