Faculties of theology are a traditional feature of most western European universities, yet in colleges of education, schools and in some newer universities the subject is studied, if at all, under the heading of 'religious studies'. Taking the question 'Is there such a subject?' as his point of departure, the author sets out to explore the relation between theology and the broader field of religious studies. Theology primarily means 'rational talk about God', but the word is used in other wider and looser senses as well. Mr Hebblethwaite discusses in what ways it is possible for non-believers to engage in theology, and stresses the need for all to pursue the subject openly and self-critically in a religiously pluralist world. Criteria for truth-claims in religion and the problem of revelation are among the topics examined. In the course of his study the author looks at the relationship between theology and a number of adjacent subjects: psychology and the social sciences, philosophy, history and ethics.

Trained in the German tradition, Rolf Knierim is a scholar who has made many significant contributions to the ongoing discussion of form criticism, tradition history, and theology. He is also a passionate and charismatic teacher and a widely respected author and editor who has served the scholarly world most visibly in his role as coeditor of the Forms of the Old Testament Literature commentary series. Problems in Biblical Theology is an erudite collection of twenty four essays produced to honor Knierim's contribution to the study of biblical theology. It also stands in its own right as a vade mecum of current trends in biblical scholarship. Written by an international array of respected scholars--Knierim's colleagues, former students, and fellow commentators--this volume includes detailed exegetical studies, discussions of theological methods and approaches from a variety of standpoints, and efforts at relating Old Testament exegesis, theology, and hermeneutics to current interests in social scientific methods of interpretation or postmodern thought. In all, the breadth of interests found in this volume reflects the intellectual vitality and passion that Knierim himself has brought to the discipline. A biographical narrative written by Hildegard Knierim and a foreword by James M. Robinson provide additional insight into the historical and social contexts within which Knierim's work has unfolded.

The Atonement written by Michael M. Winter and has been published by Liturgical Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with Atonement categories.

In recent years there has been much debate about the atonement, but the main problems remain unresolved and theologians are widely divided. Consequently the modern reader still lacks a cogent account of how exactly the human race was reconciled to God. The field is open for an entirely new approach to the age-old problems. By analysing the New Testament, the theologians of the early Church, St Anselm's theory of satisfaction and modern thinkers, Michael Winter gives an explanation of the atonement which avoids metaphor and myth and the pitfalls of the theory of placating an angry God. He offers an intellectually satisfying solution which is compatible with the Scriptures and Tradition, as well as being acceptable to the reasonable expectations of the modern mind.

Nineteen scholars assess contemporary fundamental theology. To locate and define their field, a team of international experts address four kinds of problems: 1) problems of identity and method -- the natural of fundamental theology -- in historical and in systematic perspective; 2) questions of hermeneutics; 3) Christological approaches; 4) problems of ecclesiology. No other work in any language provides such an extensive, in-depth account of the tasks and future possibilities for fundamental theology. It is an indispensable aid for understanding the revolutionary development which this discipline has undergone before, during and after the Second Vatican Council.

A proposal for the need to concentrate on the basic and simple art of doing theology in the context of a world which needs a word that is distinct from its own - a world alienated from God and still yearning to overcome its primordial alienation. Theology must be able to convey the ultimate message which is without equal, to overcome being a minority voice in an overcrowded market. [TST 58*] $89.95 248pp. 1991
