Organized into 22 chapters, this book begins with some comparisons between Greenlanders and Lapps regarding their relationship to the inclusive society. Subsequent chapters discuss the urbanization, industrialization, and changes in the family in Greenland during the reform period since 1950; ""conservation"" and ""destruction"" of traditional culture; and socio-economical transformation and modern ethnical development of the inhabitants of the Siberian polar zones of the north-eastern regions. Other chapters explain the migrations from nomad to urban districts in Northern Sweden; division of the Lapps into tradition areas; variations of settlement pattern and hunting conditions in three districts of Greenland; cultural concept in the Arctic Stone Age; and transition from hunting to nomadic economy in Finnmark.

This is an original, thoroughly researched account of the image of Canada in Soviet writings - political, jounalistic and academic - over the entire course of Soviet history. A study of the role of ideology in Soviet foreign affairs, the book traces the influence of an adjusting Marxist-Leninist "lens" on policy formulated by the Kremlin and also, explicitly, on a public discourse rigidly controlled by government. This public image has been collated with private opinion documented in recently opened Russian archives. Canada clearly served a larger purpose in Soviet foreign policy than was previously assumed. Uniquely Canadian issues and participants helped shape Soviet policy, sometimes in very strange ways. Both story and reference text, Canada in the Soviet Mirror will interest readers in Soviet and Canadian studies, journalism, and popular culture.

Competing Arctic Futures written by Nina Wormbs and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-08-06 with Science categories.
This edited collection explores how narratives about the future of the Arctic have been produced historically up until the present day. The contemporary deterministic and monolithic narrative is shown to be only one of several possible ways forward. This book problematizes the dominant prediction that there will be increased shipping and resource extraction as the ice melts and shows how this seemingly inevitable future has consequences for the action that can be taken in the present. This collection looks to historical projections about the future of the Arctic, evaluating why some voices have been heard and championed, while others remain marginalised. It questions how these historical perspectives have shaped resource allocation and governance structures to understand the forces behind change in the Arctic region. Considering the history of individuals and institutions, their political and economic networks and their perceived power, the essays in this collection offer newperspectives on how the future of the Arctic has been produced and communicated.

Historians of Russia were relative latecomers to the field of environmental history. Yet, in the past decade, the exploration of Russian environmental history has burgeoned. Thinking Russia’s History Environmentally showcases collaboration amongst an international set of scholars who focus on the contribution that the study of Russian environments makes to the global environmental field. Through discerning analysis of natural resources, the environment as a factor in historical processes such as industrialization, and more recent human-animal interactions, this volume challenges stereotypes of Russian history and in so doing, highlights the unexpected importance of Russian environments across a time frame well beyond the ecological catastrophes of the Soviet period.
