This Safety Guide provides recommendations on how to meet safety requirements on the disposal of radioactive waste. It is concerned with the disposal of solid radioactive waste by emplacement in designated facilities at or near the land surface. The Safety Guide provides guidance on the development, operation and closure of, and on the regulatory control of, near surface disposal facilities, which are suitable for the disposal of very low level waste and low level waste. The Safety Guide provides guidance on a range of disposal methods, including the emplacement of solid radioactive waste in earthen trenches, in above ground engineered structures, in engineered structures just below the ground surface and in rock caverns, silos and tunnels excavated at depths of up to a few tens of metres underground. It is intended for use primarily by those involved with policy development for, with the regulatory control of, and with the development and operation of near surface disposal facilities.

Geological Repository Systems For Safe Disposal Of Spent Nuclear Fuels And Radioactive Waste written by Michael J Apted and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-07-27 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Geological disposal has been internationally adopted as the most effective approach to assure the long-term, safe disposition of the used nuclear fuels and radioactive waste materials produced from nuclear power generation, nuclear weapons programs, medical, treatments, and industrial applications. Geological repository systems take advantage of natural geological barriers augmented with engineered barrier systems to isolate these radioactive materials from the environment and from future populations. Geological repository systems for safe disposal of spent nuclear fuels and radioactive waste critically reviews the state-of-the-art technologies, scientific methods, regulatory developments, and social engagement approaches directly related to the implementation of geological repository systems. Part one introduces geological disposal, including multiple-barrier geological repositories, as well as reviewing the impact of nuclear fuel recycling practices and underground research laboratory activities on the development of disposal concepts. Part two reviews geological repository siting in different host rocks, including long-term stability analysis and radionuclide transport modelling. Reviews of the range of engineered barrier systems, including waste immobilisation technologies, container materials, low pH concretes, clay-based buffer and backfill materials, and barrier performance are presented in Part three. Part four examines total system performance assessment and safety analyses for deep geological and near-surface disposal, with coverage of uncertainty analysis, use of expert judgement for decision making, and development and use of knowledge management systems. Finally, Part five covers regulatory and social approaches for the establishment of geological disposal programs, from the development of radiation standards and risk-informed, performance-based regulations, to environmental monitoring and social engagement in the siting and operation of repositories. With its distinguished international team of contributors, Geological repository systems for safe disposal of spent nuclear fuels and radioactive waste is a standard reference for all nuclear waste management and geological repository professionals and researchers. Critically reviews the state-of-the-art technologies, scientific methods, regulatory developments, and social engagement approaches related to the implementation of geological repository systems Chapters introduce geological disposal and review the development of disposal concepts Examines long-term stability analysis, the range of engineered barrier systems and barrier performance

Radioactive Waste Management Hazardous Waste Management Gaynor W. Dawson and Basil W. Mercer This book addresses major technical areas associated with the safe management of hazardous waste, and covers a broad spectrum of environmental, engineering, and administrative concerns. Topics discussed include regulations governing hazardous waste management, defining and quantifying hazardous wastes, facility siting, abandoned disposal sites, transportation, treatment processes, incineration, and ocean dumping. 1986 0 471-82268-X 532 pp. Hazardous and Toxic Materials Safe Handling and Disposal, 2nd Edition Edited by Howard H. Fawcett In this second edition, thirteen experts offer their views, research, and latest findings on a wide range of topical issues, including the Toxic Substances Control Act, SARA, long-term toxicity, the Delaware River pollution problem, medical care and surveillance for hazardous waste works, oil spills, aqueous foams, remediation of contaminated sites, facility siting, and safe transport of dangerous goods. This book contains new and updated data, laws, and considerations necessary for the continued upkeep of the industry’s safety standards. 1988 0 471-62729-1 514 pp. Introduction to Hazardous Waste Incineration Louis Theodore and Joseph Reynolds This invaluable reference/text is divided into four parts covering the basic concepts, principles, equipment, and applications pertaining to hazardous waste incineration. The authors have generously supplemented the text with over 70 illustrative examples, ranging from trial burn procedures to incineration applications. Readers will find these examples helpful in understanding the procedures, equations, tables, and graphs presented throughout the text. 1987 0 471-84976-6 463 pp.

This Safety Guide provides recommendations and guidance on how to plan and perform monitoring and surveillance programmes for disposal facilities for radioactive waste. The Safety Guide considers monitoring and surveillance for near surface disposal facilities, for geological disposal facilities and for facilities for the disposal of waste from mining and from mineral processing. The publication provides recommendations on how to use results from the monitoring and surveillance of radioactive waste disposal facilities over their entire lifetime. It covers the different objectives of monitoring and surveillance for the different periods of the lifetime of disposal facilities, from the initiation of work on a candidate site to the period after closure of the disposal facility.
