These Proceedings contain articles based on the lectures and informal discussions at the Conference on Transformation Groups held at Tulane University, May 8 to June 2, 1967 under the sponsorship of the Advanced Science Seminar Projects of the National Science Foundation (Contract No. GZ 400). They differ, however, from many such Conference proceedings in that particular emphasis has been given to the review and exposition of the state of the theory in its various manifestations, and the suggestion of direction to further research, rather than purely on the publication of research papers. That is not to say that there is no new material contained herein. On the contrary, there is an abundance of new material, many new ideas, new questions, and new conjectures-carefully incorporated within the framework of the theory as the various authors see it.

Group Actions On Manifolds written by Reinhard Schultz and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1985 with Mathematics categories.

Not merely an account of new results, this book is also a guide to motivation behind present work and potential future developments. Readers can obtain an overall understanding of the sorts of problems one studies in group actions and the methods used to study such problems. The book will be accessible to advanced graduate students who have had the equivalent of three semesters of graduate courses in topology; some previous acquaintance with the fundamentals of transformation groups is also highly desirable. The articles in this book are mainly based upon lectures at the 1983 AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference, Group Actions on Manifolds, held at the University of Colorado. A major objective was to provide an overall account of current knowledge in transformation groups; a number of survey articles describe the present state of the subject from several complementary perspectives. The book also contains some research articles, generally dealing with results presented at the conference. Finally, there is a discussion of current problems on group actions and an acknowledgment of the work and influence of D. Montgomery on the subject.

Cohomological Methods In Transformation Groups written by C. Allday and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993-07 with Mathematics categories.

This is an account of the theory of certain types of compact transformation groups, namely those that are susceptible to study using ordinary cohomology theory and rational homotopy theory, which in practice means the torus groups and elementary abelian p-groups. The efforts of many mathematicians have combined to bring a depth of understanding to this area. However to make it reasonably accessible to a wide audience, the authors have streamlined the presentation, referring the reader to the literature for purely technical results and working in a simplified setting where possible. In this way the reader with a relatively modest background in algebraic topology and homology theory can penetrate rather deeply into the subject, whilst the book at the same time makes a useful reference for the more specialised reader.

This book contains the results of work done during the years 1967-1970 on fixed-point-free involutions on manifolds, and is an enlarged version of the author's doctoral dissertation [54J written under the direction of Professor William Browder. The subject of fixed-paint-free involutions, as part of the subject of group actions on manifolds, has been an important source of problems, examples and ideas in topology for the last four decades, and receives renewed attention every time a new technical development suggests new questions and methods ([62, 8, 24, 63J). Here we consider mainly those properties of fixed-point-free involutions that can be best studied using the techniques of surgery on manifolds. This approach to the subject was initiated by Browder and Livesay. Special attention is given here to involutions of homotopy spheres, but even for this particular case, a more general theory is very useful. Two important related topics that we do not touch here are those of involutions with fixed points, and the relationship between fixed-point-free involutions and free Sl-actions. For these topics, the reader is referred to [23J, and to [33J, [61J, [82J, respectively. The two main problems we attack are those of classification of involutions, and the existence and uniqueness of invariant submanifolds with certain properties. As will be seen, these problems are closely related. If (T, l'n) is a fixed-point-free involution of a homotopy sphere l'n, the quotient l'n/Tis called a homotopy projective space.

This book provides an overview of some of the most active topics in the theory of transformation groups over the past decades and stresses advances obtained in the last dozen years. The emphasis is on actions of Lie groups on manifolds and CW complexes. Manifolds and actions of Lie groups on them are studied in the linear, semialgebraic, definable, analytic, smooth, and topological categories. Equivalent vector bundles play an important role. The work is divided into fifteen articles and will be of interest to anyone researching or studying transformations groups. The references make it easy to find details and original accounts of the topics surveyed, including tools and theories used in these accounts.

Computers Rigidity And Moduli written by Shmuel Weinberger and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-08 with Mathematics categories.

This book is the first to present a new area of mathematical research that combines topology, geometry, and logic. Shmuel Weinberger seeks to explain and illustrate the implications of the general principle, first emphasized by Alex Nabutovsky, that logical complexity engenders geometric complexity. He provides applications to the problem of closed geodesics, the theory of submanifolds, and the structure of the moduli space of isometry classes of Riemannian metrics with curvature bounds on a given manifold. Ultimately, geometric complexity of a moduli space forces functions defined on that space to have many critical points, and new results about the existence of extrema or equilibria follow. The main sort of algorithmic problem that arises is recognition: is the presented object equivalent to some standard one? If it is difficult to determine whether the problem is solvable, then the original object has doppelgängers--that is, other objects that are extremely difficult to distinguish from it. Many new questions emerge about the algorithmic nature of known geometric theorems, about "dichotomy problems," and about the metric entropy of moduli space. Weinberger studies them using tools from group theory, computability, differential geometry, and topology, all of which he explains before use. Since several examples are worked out, the overarching principles are set in a clear relief that goes beyond the details of any one problem.
