The PRESrnENT asked the opinion of the members on the following case. J. F--, aet. 55, a porter, came to the Throat Department of St. Thomas's Hospital on September 28th, 1894, complaining of hoarseness, which commenced fourteen days previously, a slight cough which came on after the hoarseness, with dryness, and a tickling sensation in the throat, causing frequent " hawking; " expectoration scanty; no blood; complains of drawing pain at left apex. Family history good. Past history good. No history of syphilis. E' vamination.--Fauces and pkarg/nx congested. Posterior pharyngeal wall granular, with distended veins and adherent secretion. Larynx: considerable congestion of larynx, and some swelling of ventricular bands. November 9th.--Ventricular bands more swollen, some ulceration of both vocal cords. Was put on iodide of potassium, grs. v, three times a day. December 21st.--More ulceration spreading to interarytaenoid commissure. Patient says he feels as if he were going to be choked. Complains of pain on swallowing. February 8th.--Voice slightly improved; has been taking Pot. Iodidi three months. Cough worse, and has pain in right side in region of hyoid bone on deglutition. Larynx: ventricular bands irregularly swollen; ulceration on posterior end on the right side. Vocal cords: posterior end of right side...

" Dr. WATsoN WILLIAMs congratulated Dr. Downie on the results he-had obtained over a long course of observations in such cases.' He _was,1nuch-struck by the really cosmetic results. Some of the cases had been treated four years'previously... _ Mr. STEPHEN PAGET added his congratulations. He regretted he was-not.at the last meeting, and had wondered at the dictum then quoted from aGerman doctor, who said thatthe paraffin must either remain like a bullet or must vanish. As a fact, the paraffin did not vanish. There 'were many cases where one wishedit would, where it had to be dissected out because it had gone astray. Much of the vague talk on the subject was due either to the fact that operators' did not pick and choose their cases, or that they did not pick and choosetheir paraflin. A case could not be done justice to unless there were loose, he_althy skin. ' It would be 'a good thing to collect cases years after injection. Afew days ago he saw the first case he did three and a half years ago, and the paraffin had not stirred. ' He then used it of 125 melting point, but now used it at 115. Most-of the misfortunes which occurred were due to having paraflin with 'a low melting point or to excess of paraflin. It was unfair that a method so useful for bad cases of deformity should have undeserved 'blame...
