EL 20 DE JULIO.—Los granadinos, que consideraban difícil la situación de España para atender a sus colonias en caso de un movimiento revolucionario, se habían preparado, dirigidos por los hombres más ilustres del virreinato, para no perder cualquier oportunidad de proclamar la independencia. El florero de la revolución.—En mayo de 1810 llegó a Cartagena el quiteño Antonio Villavicencio con el título de Comisario Regio. Allí dictó algunas medidas favorables a los criollos y ordenó tratar a Nariño, que estaba preso, con menos rigor. Los santafereños, que seguían cuidadosamente los pasos del nuevo enviado de España, resolvieron festejarlo a su llegada. Con tal motivo Pantaleón Santamaría, pidió al español José González Llorente que le prestara un florero para adornar la mesa en el almuerzo que darían a Villavicencio. El español se lo negó, contestándole con frases injuriosas para los americanos. Francisco Morales y su hijo Antonio, que estaban presentes, cayeron sobre él pa¬ra castigarle, y como eran las once de la mañana y día de mercado, el pueblo se arremolinó rápidamente y prorrumpió en mueras a los españoles. El alcalde, José Miguel Pey, encarceló entonces a José González Llorente para evitar que fuera castigado por el pueblo. El cabildo abierto.—El tumulto crecía por momentos: las tiendas y las casas de algunos españoles fueron apedreadas, las campanas tocaban a vuelo sin interrupción y en la plaza, miles de personas de toda condición gritaban: ¡queremos cabildo abierto! ¡Necesitamos una Junta Suprema que rija nuestros destinos! Y a los gritos de ¡cabildo abierto!, fue desarmada la guardia de la cárcel, invadida la Casa Consistorial y tomado el parque militar.

Vida y muerte de un convento es un estudio ambicioso, original y riguroso sobre el Convento de Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Santafé de Bogotá, desde su fundación en 1550 hasta su disolución en 1861. El enfoque de la historia social de la religión desde el cual se aborda esta investigación permite que el análisis de la historia del convento se tome como un estudio de caso de una problemática compleja: la interrelación entre la Iglesia católica y la sociedad colombiana. En este sentido, se recorre la historia de Bogotá y la historia de Colombia, observadas desde el claustro conventual que albergó a una comunidad religiosa sumamente influyente en ámbitos como la organización social, el arte, la economía, la educación y la política. No obstante, esta investigación no solo busca identificar en qué medida el convento influyó en su entorno, sino también cómo este a su vez afectó a aquel y determinó su organización, su composición, su estructura y su comportamiento internos, sus ideas y visiones de mundo. Los conventos, como entidades humanas, no son impermeables a los cambios sociales y también evolucionan internamente a la par de estos. Este libro es, pues, un estudio de la estructura y la evolución internas del convento, al tiempo que pretende examinar su ciclo de vida, de acuerdo con los lineamientos propuestos por Raymond Hostie.

The largest rebellion in the history of Spain's American empire—a conflict greater in territory and costlier in lives than the contemporaneous American Revolution—began as a local revolt against colonial authorities in 1780. As an official collector of tribute for the imperial crown, José Gabriel Condorcanqui had seen firsthand what oppressive Spanish rule meant for Peru's Indian population. Adopting the Inca royal name Tupac Amaru, he set events in motion that would transform him into Latin America's most iconic revolutionary figure. Tupac Amaru's political aims were modest at first. He claimed to act on the Spanish king's behalf, expelling corrupt Spaniards and abolishing onerous taxes. But the rebellion became increasingly bloody as it spread throughout Peru and into parts of modern-day Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. By late 1780, Tupac Amaru, his wife Micaela Bastidas, and their followers had defeated the Spanish in numerous battles and gained control over a vast territory. As the rebellion swept through Indian villages to gain recruits and overthrow the Spanish corregidors, rumors spread that the Incas had returned to reclaim their kingdom. Charles Walker immerses readers in the rebellion's guerrilla campaigns, propaganda war, and brutal acts of retribution. He highlights the importance of Bastidas—the key strategist—and reassesses the role of the Catholic Church in the uprising's demise. The Tupac Amaru Rebellion examines why a revolt that began as a multiclass alliance against European-born usurpers degenerated into a vicious caste war—and left a legacy that continues to influence South American politics today.
