During the 1990s, several national economies saw their urban food markets collapse. Like Zambia, Mozambique, and Armenia, Cuba responded to this crisis with a food program that included support to urban agriculture: farming in the city. As a result, food prices are increasing, free markets have been reinstated, production cooperatives have been linked with markets, land has been redistributed, and areas under export crops have been converted to domestic food crops. The Cuban government is now calling upon its cities to become more self-reliant for food OCo a focus that is dramatically modifying the landscape, lifestyle, and food supply of Havana residents."

En las últimas décadas, la agricultura urbana y periurbana (AUP) se ha desarrollado en todo el mundo como una de las prácticas más interesantes de transformación territorial, económica y socio-política. En todos los continentes, las experiencias en este ámbito son numerosas y significativas y definen ese tipo de agricultura como un fenómeno extremamente complejo y heterogeneo, capaz de adaptarse a contextos específicos y responder a una amplia serie de demandas y emergencias. A partir de esta evidencia y de la necesidad de profundizar la capacidad de transformación de este tipo de agricultura, se ha puesto en marcha el presente trabajo de investigación, cuyo desarrollo ha tenido una doble finalidad. Por un lado, a partir de una hipótesis que veía la agricultura urbana y periurbana como elemento de transformación multidimensional, se ha tratado demostrar su capacidad de impulsar procesos participativos y de empoderamiento. Y por otro lado se ha tratado identificar, a través del análisis de la interacción de las distintas dimensiones/funciones y de la combinación de elementos y aspectos teóricos y prácticos, rurales y urbanos, locales y globales, algunos rasgos comunes de la agricultura urbana y periurbana, con el intento de brindar un conjunto de herramientas teóricas y prácticas útiles para afrontar la crisis del modelo urbano neoliberal y definir alternativas de manejo del territorio urbano/periurbano. A tal fin, el estudio incluye, a lado de una parte teórica, una investigación de campo realizada en tres proyectos entre España e Italia. La investigación está caracterizada por un enfoque comparativo y polivalente, capaz de analizar los varios aspectos del fenómeno (ambiental/agronómico, económico, social y político) y averiguar su eficacia en contextos diferentes aunque similares por algunas caracteristicas geográficas, sociales, culturales y económicas (crisis del sistema económico capitalista). Los resultados alcanzados, detallados en la segunda parte del estudio, demuestran, tanto a nivel cuantitativo como cualitativo, el importante papel de la agricultura urbana y periurbana en la generación de transformaciones orientadas al empoderamiento, a la justicia socioa-ambiental y a la democratización de los procesos decisionales.

This book examines the role and position of urban agriculture in the spatial and functional structure of cities in the Global South. In the face of dynamic urbanisation and negative consequences of climate change, one of the key challenges is not only how to provide food for the ever-growing urban population but also how to achieve urban sustainability and simultaneously reduce the negative impact of cities on the natural environment. These problems are particularly urgent in the metropolises of the Global South that are experiencing the greatest population growth while struggling with increasing social inequalities and the resulting uneven distribution of resources. Examining the role that urban agriculture can play in addressing these challenges, this book draws on three case study cities: Havana, Singapore and Kigali. The case studies, differing in socio-economic, spatial, political and environmental terms, exemplify diverse characteristics of urban agriculture in different geographical conditions. Drawing on fieldwork conducted in each city, the book also provides a unique perspective on the constraints in the development of urban agriculture and the use of its full potential for urban sustainability. Throughout the world, the kitchen is the heart of family and community life. Yet, while everyone has a story to tell about their grandmother's kitchen, the myriad activities that go on in this usually female world are often devalued, and little scholarly attention has been paid to this crucial space in which family, gender, and community relations are forged and maintained. To give the kitchen the prominence and respect it merits, Maria Elisa Christie here offers a pioneering ethnography of kitchenspace in three central Mexican communities, Xochimilco, Ocotepec, and Tetecala. Christie coined the term "kitchenspace" to encompass both the inside kitchen area in which everyday meals for the family are made and the larger outside cooking area in which elaborate meals for community fiestas are prepared by many women working together. She explores how both kinds of meal preparation create bonds among family and community members. In particular, she shows how women's work in preparing food for fiestas gives women status in their communities and creates social networks of reciprocal obligation. In a culture rigidly stratified by gender, Christie concludes, kitchenspace gives women a source of power and a place in which to transmit the traditions and beliefs of older generations through quasi-sacramental food rites.

El presente libro es el resultado de investigación de distintos proyectos en América Latina que se enlazan desde el Programa-Red Estudios del Rururbano en América Latina (ELER). Por este motivo, es necesario, antes de continuar con los antecedentes que llevan al ELER a pensar en una segunda publicación luego de su fundación en 2019, explicar qué entendemos por rururbano . Lo rururbano es una configuración territorial que puede ubicarse básicamente en tres órdenes: en los márgenes del campo y de la ciudad, en lo rural excentrado con modos de vida urbanos-urbanizados en el campo o, también, en los modos de vida rurales de la ciudad. Estos órdenes representan las nuevas realidades del estudio del territorio o, mejor aún, de cómo las realidades socioespaciales que se han ido configurando en las últimas décadas han dado paso al planteamiento de lo que denominamos como territorios rururbanos contemporáneos .

El estado de Morelos en general, y su región de Los Altos no es la excepción, vive desde hace varias décadas una serie de transformaciones aceleradas en cuanto a la configuración de su territorio debido a diferentes factores. El presente libro aborda el estudio de los cambios en el sistema productivo y las consecuencias que la globalización del sistema agroalimentario ha tenido en el sector agrícola regional, sus repercusiones en los movimientos migratorios y las características de los mismos. Asimismo, identifica las principales "estrategias adaptativas" de los pobladores ante estos procesos, los cambios en el uso del suelo y en el mercado de tierras y las características que adquieren las nuevas formas de apropiación territorial y el proceso de urbanización, identificando a los actores que intervienen y sus relaciones sociales. Finalmente, analiza las consecuencias, en términos socioespaciales, de la nueva relación entre lo público y lo privado en dicho proceso de urbanización y las características del proceso de segregación socioespacial tan acendrado que hoy viven la región y sus pobladores.
