The Economics Of Food Loss In The Produce Industry written by Travis Minor and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-11-20 with Business & Economics categories.

Food loss is a serious issue in the United States. It affects all aspects of the supply chain, from farmers to consumers. While much is already known about loss at the consumer level, our understanding of the amount of food that never makes it to this stage is more limited. The Economics of Food Loss in the Produce Industry focuses on the economics of food loss as they apply to on-farm produce production, and the losses that are experienced early. The book both analyses current food loss literature and presents new empirical research. It draws lessons from those who have encountered these issues by focusing on how past regional or national estimates of food loss have been conducted with varying degrees of success. It includes chapters on several themes: understanding food loss from an economic perspective; efforts to measure food loss; case studies across commodities within the produce industry; and economic risks and opportunities. The commodity case studies provide detailed discussion of factors impacting changes in loss levels within the produce industry, and a wealth of knowledge on strategies and contexts is developed. The book concludes by identifying critical knowledge gaps and establishing future priorities. This book serves as an essential reference guide for academics, researchers, students, legislative liaisons, non-profit associations, and think tank groups in agriculture and agricultural economics.

Organised Produce Markets Classic Reprint written by John George Smith and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-04 with Business & Economics categories.

Excerpt from Organised Produce Markets This volume, based on lectures delivered in the Faculty of Commerce of the University of Birmingham, in intended primarily for the use of students. The interest, however, of its subject matter to business men and others, and the lack of a recent work for English readers on the aspects of marketing herein treated, suggest that it is likely to appeal to a wider audience than that of the University classroom. Therefore, references to conceptions likely to be familiar only to students of economic theory have been omitted as far as possible; but it is not to be inferred from this that the book is entirely descriptive. Discussion has not been avoided when it seemed likely to lead to useful generalisations or suggestive conclusions. It does not come within the scope of the book to treat of wholesale markets generally in England. Much information has been collected recently both by the Departmental Committee, set up in 1919 by the Food Controller to report on the existing wholesale markets for perishable food in London, and by the Public Control Committee of the London County Council; but further inquiry and research are necessary before this branch of marketing can be advantageously summarised. Naturally, in a work of this kind, the writer is largely indebted to others for information concerning the market organisation described. Secretaries of trade associations and exchanges have, in the majority of cases, courteously supplied all the information requested. One important English exchange authority, for reasons not readily apparent, declines to permit non-members to examine its clearing-house forms, even when unused. This, however, has proved to be less serious an obstacle than at one time appeared probable. It is believed that the facts and figures given concerning the several exchanges described are correct up to the close of 1921, and that no recent innovations of importance have been overlooked. This text describes water's use in the production of raw fuels, as an energy carrier (e.g., hot water and steam), and as a reactant, reaction medium, and catalyst for the conversion of raw fuels to synthetic fuels. It explains how supercritical water is used to convert fossil- and bio-based feedstock to synthetic fuels in the presence and absence of a catalyst. It also explores water as a direct source of energy and fuel, such as hydrogen from water dissociation, methane from water-based clathrate molecules, and more.

This book includes the impact, compression, vibration studies, and destructive and nondestructive techniques for bruise measurement. It is essential to detect bruises in the early stages of their formation and conduct a quantitative analysis of the degree of bruising, to ensure the accurate grading of bruised fruits and vegetables and reduce unnecessary economic losses. Bruise damage occurring between the point of harvest and consumption contributes the most to the decrease in fruit quality, reducing the market value and ultimately leading to significant reductions in potential revenue. SDG 12.3 aims to “by 2030, halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses.” This book presents recent technological developments in bruise measurement, detection, and analysis of fresh horticultural produce. Given the rising demand for rapid and accurate methods of quality measurement in the horticultural produce industry, this book covers destructive and nondestructive techniques for bruise measurement. Selected applications of different nondestructive methods for various fresh produce commodities are also included. This book will interest graduate and undergraduate students, researchers, academics and engineers working in different aspects of the mechanical damage affected by postharvest handling practices, professionals working in the governments, and other authorities related to fresh horticultural produce quality, regulations, and safety.
