Excerpt from Productive Vegetable Growing The War has given a special impetus to vegetable production, and particularly to the planting of home gardens. The Substitution of vegetables for some of the more concentrated foods in the diet of civilians will release for the use of the American army and the Allies large quantities of cereals and meats. So far as these vegetables are the the products of home gardens, they will reduce the amount of transportation necessary to supply food to the American people, and thus assist in relieving the railroads in this time of congested traffic. There was never a time when home gardens were more important; yet in the present effort to increase vegetable production, there is likely to be large waste if energy and seeds by those previously unfamiliar with vegetable gardening, unless they have proper guidance. the special literature being published to meet this emergency is good in many respects, but much of it is fragmentary and leaves the reader without a firm grasp of fundamental principles of gardening. It is hoped that the present edition of Productive Vegetable Growing will supply this need, and be of material assistance to planters of "war Gardens." Excerpt from The Principles of Vegetable-Gardening Market-gardening is the growing of vegetables for sale. The American term truck-gardening is really synonymous, although it is sometimes used in connec tion with the larger market-gardening enterprises. An arbitrary distinction between market-gardening and truck gardening was made by J. H. Hale in the work for the Eleventh Census. In Bulletin 41 of the Census Bureau, truck gardening is understood as the business carried on in favored localities at a distance from market, water and rail transportation being necessary, while market-gardening is conducted near local mar kets, the grower of vegetables using his own team for transporting his products direct to either the retailer or consumer. This distinction is not a fundamental one, and is not the general understanding of the terms; but it seemed to be necessary, for statistical reasons, to make the separation. Excerpt from Vegetable Forcing Vegetable forcing occupies an important place in American horticulture. The subject is taught to large numbers of students, and it has enlisted the interest of thousands of gardeners who are attracted by the idea of growing vegetables under artificial conditions. To meet the needs of these two groups of people has been the constant aim of the author. The treatise is necessarily condensed. It has not seemed expedient to enter into a lengthy discussion of subjects naturally belonging to the entomologist, plant pathologist, botanist or chemist. This would necessarily result in the overlapping of college courses and in trying the patience of practical growers who want merely a working knowledge of the principles and practices in volved in the production of the various forcing crops. Frequent visits have been made to the most important vegetable forcing centers of the United States. Many bulletins of the agricultural experiment stations and of the United States Department of Agriculture have proved to be of great value as sources of information. Special mention should be made in this connection of the Market Growers' Journal, and of courtesies extended by its mana ger and editor, Sam W. Severance.
