The subject is taught to large numbers of students, and it has enlisted the interest of thousands of gardeners who are attracted by the idea of growing vegetables under artificial conditions. To meet the needs of these two groups of people has been the constant aim of the author. The treatise is necessarily condensed. It has not seemed expedient to enter into a lengthy discussion of subjects naturally belonging to the entomologist, plant pathologist, botanist or chemist. This would necessarily result in the overlapping of college courses and in trying the patience of practical growers who want merely a working knowledge of the principles and practices in volved in the production of the various forcing crops. Frequent visits have been made to the most important vegetable forcing centers of the United States. Many bulletins of the agricultural experiment stations and of the United States Department of Agriculture have proved to be of great value as sources of information. Special mention should be made in this connection of the Market Growers' Journal, and of courtesies extended by its mana ger and editor, Sam W. Severance. It is only within the last one or two generations that the growing of plants in glass houses for the purpose of selling the product of bloom or of fruit has come to be important and widespread. The most recent part of the expansion, at least in this country, is the com mercial growing of winter vegetables. It speaks well for the prosperity and refinement of our people when they are willing and able to purchase freely of the delicacies of the winter garden. This is one of those branches of agriculture which demands the nicest skill and the closest fellowship with plants. It is, therefore, one in which comparatively few people are fitted to engage, but it must, from the very force of civilization, be one of those occupations which shall gain impetus with time. If it is a business which demands much care and pains, then its promoters must be students. They will need helps. It is this thought which has produced this book. On these principles I have established my sharp angles and vine border-protector. I believe it will be found that The Asparagus Pit, ' The Lily of the Valley and Christmas Rose Pit, ' The Gooseberry House, ' The Potato House, ' 'the Pea Frame, ' and The Wall Peach Screens, ' will recommend themselves, and be regarded as something new, and of some importance in their various capacities.
