The highly developed industrial countries today have to face the challenge of accelerated structural change. The problems arising from this process are tackled in very different ways. In the public discussion the different approaches of Japan on the one side and of Western European countries on the other have received consider able attention. Structural change in its economic, social and political aspects has been the subject of the 8th German-Japanese Seminar on Economics and Social Sciences, held at Cologne from the 24th to the 27th of September, 1984. The tradition of German-Japanese Seminars on Economics and Social Sciences goes back to 1966, when the first meeting was held at Tokyo. Among the first participants were Dr. Hiromi Arizawa, Dr. Kazuo Okochi, both professors at the University of Tokyo, and Dr. Karl Hax, professor at Frankfurt University. The objective of all seminars, which have been held since, has been the analysis of eco nomic and social problems of immediate interest in both countries. The records of former seminars, which have been published partly in Japanese, partly in German throw light upon the shift of empha sis toward new problems which took place during aperiod of 18 years.

The Japanese economy has achieved remarkable growth since the end of World War II, outpacing that of other advanced industrial nations. The most significant contribution to this growth has been the level of investment in technology. In contrast to other advanced economies, this investment has been funded primarily by private industry; the level of R & D investment by the Japanese government is the lowest among the advanced countries.

Energy costs in the economy amount to only a few percent of gross domestic product, but their importance to economic growth is much greater than their apparent number. Energy is used in almost all production and consumption activities, and energy price changes induce significant spillover effects throughout the economic system. More importantly, stable and affordable access to energy is a critical factor in determining the rate of capital accumulation in a domestic economy and, hence, labor productivity growth. The expansion of production per hour worked is achieved by using more and higher quality capital, which requires more energy to operate. This book aims to provide robust observational facts on energy productivity improvement (EPI) and to analyze the mechanisms of EPI achieved in Japan’s economic growth from 1955 to 2019. Linking the productivity account with energy statistics enables us to attempt not only to develop a better indicator of energy productivity but also to evaluate the EPI with other significant changes in the production process, such as capital productivity, labor productivity, and even the overall efficiency measured in terms of total factor productivity. This book is a valuable resource for researchers and policymakers seeking to understand the role of energy throughout the economy and for economic planners seeking to ensure the efficient use of energy now and into the future.

Emerging from the ruins of the Second World War, the Japanese economy has grown at double-digit rate throughout much of the 1950s and 1960s, and, when the oil crisis of the 1970s slowed growth throughout the industrialized world, Japanese growth throughout the industrialized world, Japanese growth rates remained relatively strong. There have been many attempts by scholars from a wide range of disciplines to explain this remarkable history, but for economists interested in the quantitative analysis of economic growth and the principal question addressed is how Japan was able to grow so rapidly. The contributors focus their efforts on the accurate measurement and comparison of Japanese and U.S. economic growth. Assuming that any sustained increase in real GNP must be due either to an increase in the quantity of capital and labor used in production or to the more efficient use of these inputs, the authors analyze the individual contributions of various factors and their importance in the process of output growth. These essays extend the methodology of growth analysis and offer many insights into the factors leading to the superior performance of the Japanese economy. They demonstrate that growth is a complex process and no single factor can explain the Japanese 'miracle.'

Technology Diffusion Productivity Employment And Phase Shifts In Developing Economies written by Kazushi Ōkawa and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994 with Developing countries categories.

The authors view economic development as an extended process, and their model is formulated in terms of a dualistic structure, which they see as characterizing developing economies: the traditional coexisting with the modern. Their analysis attempts to quantify this structure, and to examine how changes in the balance between tradition and modernity affect technological diffusion, factor prices, the labor market, and the sequence of events in economic growth.
