Demzufolge ist die logistische Leistungsfähigkeit produzierender Unternehmen heute so wichtig wie noch nie zuvor. Der schnelle technologische Wandel und die damit angestrebte Produktivitätsverbesserung erfordern ein leistungsfähiges Produktionscontrolling. Hierzu werden PK-Systeme und IS verwendet um die Produktion kontrolliert zu steuern und dem Kundenbedarf gerecht zu werden. Um die Wirtschaftlichkeit des Produktionsprozesses zu gewährleisten ist ein leistungsfähiges Produktionscontrolling zwingend notwendig um frühzeitig im Falle von Abweichungen in den Prozess eingreifen zu können. Um ein effizientes Produktionscontrolling aufbauen zu können, muss zunächst geklärt werden, welche Ziele sich vorrangig aus der Unternehmensstrategie ableiten und welche Charakteristika das Unternehmen auszeichnen. Zur Steuerung des Produktionsbereichs stehen dem Produktionscontrolling zahlreiche Instrumente zur Verfügung die im Kapitel drei näher erläutert werden. Das Instrument, dem Produktionscontrolling in der Literatur besonders große Bedeutung beigemessen wird, sind die Kennzahlen und Kennzahlensysteme. Für ein Unternehmen sind Kennzahlen von großer Relevanz, da sie in den verschiedensten Bereichen vorkommen und komplizierte Sachverhalte komprimiert erfassen. Aus diesem Grund sind Kennzahlen in der Unternehmenspraxis weit verbreitet und werden deshalb im Abschnitt 3.2.1 ausführlich betrachtet. Im Kapitel 2 wird zunächst definiert, was der Begriff Produktionscontrolling bedeutet und anschließend werden die Aufgaben, Funktionen und die Instrumente des Produktionscontrollings erläutert. Da es zahlreiche Instrumente im Produktionscontrolling gibt und eine genaue Darstellung mehrerer Instrumente den Rahmen dieser Seminararbeit sprengen würde, wird in erster Linie die Instrumente Kennzahlen und Kennzahlensysteme betrachtet. Es werden ausgewählte Kennzahlen im Produktionsbereich dargestellt und differenziert. Desweiteren wird ein weiteres operatives Instrument, die Kennzahlensysteme, betrachtet, da dieses Instrument in der Praxis häufig verwendet wird, sowie die beiden bedeutenden strategischen Instrumente Balanced Scorecard, die eine besondere Form von Kennzahlensystem ist und die Produktlebenszyklus Analyse. Im Fazit werden Barrieren sowie Defizite und Entwicklungsbedarf im Produktionscontrolling aufgezeigt.
