For a people returning to their homeland, the Bible served as a legal document of ownership and as an historical and political model for the newly revived Jewish kingdom. At the same time, however, it became the focal point for the people's personal hopes, expectations, disappointments, and frustrations with the Promised Land. It is the latter, Ruth Kartun-Blum argues, that fuels the fascination that biblical myth holds for the modern Israeli poet.

Long considered the product of imagination and superstition, the world's sacred writings compile what is often thought to be an archaic world view. Yet, many of these sacred writings describe a nature of reality that is in striking parallel to emerging modern scientific theory. Still more shocking is the similarity between the entities described in the Bible and those described within the reports of modern paranormal events! - Does modern science and the Bible agree about the nature of reality? - Is it possible that life exists in other dimensions? - Who built many of the ancient civilizations upon earth? - What is the purpose of modern day paranormal events? - Are the entities described in modern day paranormal reports mankind's helpers? - Can earth soon expect a coming Messiah? When a dancing master arrived in Boston in 1685 and offered lessons and classes for both sexes during times normally reserved for church meetings, the Puritan ministers went to court to suppress the practice. Increase Mather (1639-1723) took the leading part, writing and publishing this tract, which compiles arguments and precedents for the prohibition of "Gynecandrical Dancing, [i.e.] Mixt or Promiscuous Dancing, viz. of Men and Women ... together." These justifications were certainly shared with the court, which found the dancing master guilty, fined him £100, and allowed him to skip town. Mather's tract on dancing is an overwhelming compendium of sources and authorities: from the Bible, classical authors, Christian Church Fathers, medieval philosophers, and Reformed theologians both Continental and English. None of them, it appears, approved of mixed dancing-because it leads to adultery and worse. The vilest sins and the direst disasters lie only a short step from the dance floor. The Arrow is remarkable for two things (at least): for how much allusion and citation are packed into its brief 30 pages, and for how quickly it escalates the issue into life-or-death scenarios, all vividly painted to emphasize the mortal danger of men and women dancing together.

Humans have been uttering profane words and incurring the consequences for millennia. But contemporary eventsÑfrom the violence in 2006 that followed Danish newspaper cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed to the 2012 furor over the Innocence of Muslims videoÑindicate that controversy concerning blasphemy has reemerged in explosive transnational form. In an age when electronic media transmit offense as rapidly as profane images and texts can be produced, blasphemy is bracingly relevant again. In this volume, a distinguished cast of international scholars examines the profound difficulties blasphemy raises for modern societies. Contributors examine how the sacred is formed and maintained, how sacrilegious expression is conceived and regulated, and how the resulting conflicts resist easy adjudication. Their studies range across art, history, politics, law, literature, and theology. Because of the global nature of the problem, the volumeÕs approach is comparative, examining blasphemy across cultural and geopolitical boundaries.
