This work calls into question the assertion that global capitalism functions as an autonomous empire ruled only by the market and multinational corporations. In contrast, it is argued, the role of the imperial state is central in regard to the form taken by capitalist development. Within the context of a broad discussion that takes us from Latin America to Russia and China, to Iraq and around the world, this work analyzes the economic base of imperial power and actions of the state in the maintenance and spread of empire. It also demonstrates the limits and costs of empire to the citizens of the United States. Far from the triumphant declarations of George W. Bush and his cronies, the Iraqi resistance has put the lie to the racist image of Arab haters in the Pentagon and their colleagues in Israel. The Arabs are neither cowed by US military power nor incapable of organizing resistance; it is US soldiers in the hundreds who are resigning from the military, it is the US government that is desperately begging for mercenaries from Central America to replace the demoralized US forces. Yet the state must prevail in order for the empire to flourish. Book jacket.

This book looks at the third pillar of resistance to British colonialism – people’s resistance, the others being Mau Mau and radical trade union movement. It brings together several aspects of people’s resistance to colonialism and imperialism – before and after independence and includes resistance by nationalities, women, students, peasants and workers in what can only be described as people’s resistance. While Mau Mau and trade unions were essential in the liberation struggle, on their own they would have faced innumerable difficulties to achieve their goal. Peasants, nationalities, women, children and young people, students, independent churches, independent schools, all played a part in reinforcing the organized and ideology led resistance of Mau Mau and trade unions. Additional material is included to provide thought for reflections. The first two essays deal with the question of nationalities and with the contradictions between capitalism and socialism with the collapse of USSR. They point to the fact that that the struggle in Kenya influences, and is in turn influenced by, developments around the world. The next section is the presentation at the launch of Kenya’s War of Independence in Nairobi on February 21, 2018. The final section contains solidarity messages from Shiraz Durrani, Abdilatif Abdalla and Kang'ethe Mungai at the event to commemorate and celebrate the revolutionary work of Karimi Nduthu held on March 24, 2018 at the Professional Centre in Nairobi. The Kenya Resists Series covers different aspects of resistance by people of Kenya to colonialism and imperialism. It reproduces material from books, unpublished reports, research and oral or visual testimonies. The three aspects chosen for the first three publications in the Series – Mau Mau, Trade Unions and People’s Resistance – make up the three pillars of resistance of the people of Kenya.

Selling The Congo written by Matthew G. Stanard and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-01-01 with Political Science categories.

Belgium was a small, neutral country without a colonial tradition when King Leopold II ceded the Congo, his personal property, to the state in 1908. For the next half century Belgium not only ruled an African empire but also, through widespread, enduring, and eagerly embraced propaganda, produced an imperialist-minded citizenry. Selling the Congo is a study of European pro-empire propaganda in Belgium, with particular emphasis on the period 1908–60. Matthew G. Stanard questions the nature of Belgian imperialism in the Congo and considers the Belgian case in light of literature on the French, British, and other European overseas empires. Comparing Belgium to other imperial powers, the book finds that pro-empire propaganda was a basic part of European overseas expansion and administration during the modern period. Arguing against the long-held belief that Belgians were merely “reluctant imperialists,” Stanard demonstrates that in fact many Belgians readily embraced imperialistic propaganda. Selling the Congo contributes to our understanding of the effectiveness of twentieth-century propaganda by revealing its successes and failures in the Belgian case. Many readers familiar with more-popular histories of Belgian imperialism will find in this book a deeper examination of European involvement in central Africa during the colonial era.

Globalization Unmasked written by James F. Petras and has been published by Halifax, N.S. : Fernwood this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Business & Economics categories.

In this book, the authors contend that "globalization" is little more than imperialism in a new form. They argue that the "inevitability" of globalization and the adjustment or submission of peoples all over the world to free market capitalism depends on the capacity of the dominant and ruling classes to bend people to their will and convince people that their interests are the people's interests. A key element in theorizing about globalization and in organizing to resist it is an understanding that globalization is propagated not to bring a better and more just world to the masses of the people but, as has always been the case with imperialism, to advance the interests of those who already enjoy power and privilege.

James Midgley provides a broad overview of social welfare, outlining key institutions, terminology, historical research, and approaches. He also details reasons for the existence of international social welfare and the challenges that arise from it. The author includes an important section on applied international social welfare that addresses the concerns of practitionersùconcerns that have been neglected in much of the literature in the field. An entire section of the book is devoted to issues of social work practice, social development, the activities of international agencies, and their collaborative efforts. While practical application is an important focus of the book, several chapters deal with key theoretical debates in the field. The author also includes descriptive chapters that provide comprehensive accounts of world social conditions and social welfare institutions. As a textbook on international social welfare, Social Welfare in Global Context is primarily intended for students and practitioners of social work, social administration, and social policy. But it is also relevant for students of sociology, public policy, and economics.
