Il volume che qui presentiamo in edizione italiana era parte di una storia delle idee politiche scritta da Voegelin negli anni Cinquanta, ma da lui lasciata inedita. Il manoscritto fu però visionato da John H. Hallowell, il quale ne estrapolò alcuni capitoli, «Crisis and apocalypse of man» e «Revolution and the new science», giudicandoli sostanzialmente autonomi dal resto dell'opera e di enorme importanza per la comprensione dei processi politici contemporanei. È cosí che nasce l'edizione del 1975 di «From Enlightenment to Revolution», analisi organica e puntuale di quegli aspetti del pensiero politico del settecento e dell'ottocento che, secondo Voegelin, rappresentano le premesse ideologiche all'affermazione delle ideologie totalitarie.

Joseph Fouché nacque nei pressi di Nantes nel 1759, divenne uno degli uomini più potenti della sua epoca e morì dimenticato nel 1820, in esilio a Trieste. Personalità sconcertante e inafferrabile, ha mantenuto il potere nel ventennio più tormentato della storia francese, dalla Rivoluzione alla Restaurazione, confrontandosi alla pari con personaggi come Robespierre e Napoleone. Fu regicida, saccheggiatore di chiese e spietato repressore della rivolta di Lione, quindi duca d’Otranto, ministro napoleonico e capo della Polizia politica. Un trasformista di genio e un antieroe dalla morale enigmatica o assente, che Stefan Zweig racconta come «l’uomo che, nella sua vita e nella Storia, ha saputo rimanere nell’ombra». Ricostruire la sua vita, densa come un romanzo e avvolta nell’ambiguità, è una vera sfida per il grande scrittore viennese, ma anche l’occasione per indagare i meccanismi della politica e la loro influenza sulla natura umana. Fouché diventa allora il prototipo dell’animale politico che controlla gli eventi celando le proprie passioni, che riesce a mantenere il sangue freddo di fronte alle crisi, che sa rialzarsi dopo ogni caduta, che nutre ideali ma è pronto a sacrificarli nella lotta per il potere. Così, riscoprendo una figura storica che fu – e forse volle essere – dimenticata, ne possiamo riconoscere anche l’inquietante modernità.
