Revisionen des Epochenprofils durch einen historisch trennscharfen Konzept-rahmen zu ermöglichen - mit diesem Ziel hat der Münchner Sonderforschungsbereich 573 eine Heuristik erarbeitet, die sich von den Teleologien vorgängiger Forschungsparadigmen abhebt. Anders als Konzepte wie ‚Modernisierung‘, ‚Säkularisierung‘ oder ‚Rationalisierung‘ zielt diese Heuristik darauf ab, richtungsoffene und widersprüchliche Entwicklungen auf allen Ebenen der frühneuzeitlichen Kultur zu erkennen und zu beschreiben. Für die Frühe Neuzeit ist typisch, dass Autoritäten auf Gegenautoritäten treffen, Institutionen miteinander konkurrieren, Traditionen in Frage gestellt werden, unterschiedliche Modelle der Praxis entwickelt werden und die Ordnung der Disziplinen durch epistemische und mediale Umbrüche transformiert wird. Die Dynamik der Pluralisierung erfasst somit auch deren - vermeintlich statisches - Pendant, die Autorität, die sich in Prozessen der Autorisierung stets neu behaupten muss. Die Aufsätze des Bandes - zehn von Münchner, fünf von auswärtigen Beiträgern - entstammen größtenteils der Abschlusstagung, mit der der SFB Ergebnisse und Perspektiven seiner elfjährigen Forschungsarbeit zur Diskussion stellte.

This is the third volume of Models of the History of Philosophy, a collaborative work on the history of the history of philosophy dating from the Renaissance to the end of the nineteenth century. The volume covers a decisive period in the history of modern thought, from Voltaire and the great “Encyclopédie” of Diderot and d'Alembert to the age of Kant, i.e. from the histoire de l'esprit humain animated by the idea of progress to the a priori history of human thought. The interest of the philosophes and the Kantians (Buhle and Tennemann) in the study and the reconstruction of the philosophies of the past was characterized by a spirit that was highly critical, but at the same time systematic. The material is divided into four large linguistic and cultural areas: the French, Italian, British and German. The detailed analysis of the 35 works which can be considered to be “general” histories of philosophy is preceded and accompanied by lengthy introductions on the historical background and references to numerous other works bordering on philosophical historiography.

In der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts hat sich in der Geschichtswissenschaft "Frühe Neuzeit" als Epochenbegriff für die Zeit von ca. 1500 bis ca. 1800 weitgehend durchgesetzt. Zum Erfolg des Epochenbegriffs gehört, dass er auch in zahlreichen historischen Teildisziplinen Verbreitung fand, in denen sich für diesen Zeitraum sehr unterschiedliche Bezeichnungen eingebürgert hatten. Im vorliegenden Band wird "Frühe Neuzeit" interdisziplinär diskutiert und in wissens-, literatur- und kunst-, konfessions-, raum-, politik- und wirtschaftsgeschichtlichen Kontexten thematisiert. In einer Zeit, in der die Globalisierung die Welt und folglich auch die Weltgeschichte stärker ins Blickfeld rückt, muss zudem die Frage gestellt werden, ob "Frühe Neuzeit" als eine zunächst auf Mitteleuropa bezogene Epoche auch in den Geschichten anderer Weltgegenden - etwa dem indischen, atlantischen und japanischen Raum - als Epochenbezeichnung brauchbar ist.
