Queen of Sorrows takes an original approach to both late-medieval Italian history and the history of Christianity, using quantitative and qualitative analyses of a remarkable archive of 1,904 testaments to determine patterns in giving to the Virgin of Loreto shrine in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. Bianca M. Lopez argues that in central Italy, as elsewhere, the cult of the Virgin Mary gained new prominence at this time of unprecedented mortality. Individuals gave to Santa Maria di Loreto, which houses the structure in which Mary is believed to have lived, as an expression of their grief in the hope of strengthening family lineages beyond death and to care for loved ones believed to be languishing in purgatory. Lopez establishes statistical correlations between different social groups and their donations to Loreto over time, uncovering informative new historical patterns such as the prominence of widow and migrant donors in the notarial record. The testaments also provide a social history of Recanati, revealing how its denizens venerated Mary as a saint with unrivaled spiritual power and uniquely sympathetic to grief, having lost her own son, Jesus. In the fourteenth century, plague survivors transformed their anguish into Marian devotion. The devastation of the plague brought the Virgin out of noble courts and monasteries and onto city streets. As Queen of Sorrows details, however, the popularity and growing wealth of Loreto's Marian shrine attracted the attention of the papacy and peninsular seigneurial lords, who eventually brought Santa Maria di Loreto under the control of the Church.

Icons of Space: Advances in Hierotopy brings together important scholars of Byzantine religion, art, and architecture, to honour the work of renowned art historian Alexei Lidov. As well as his numerous publications, Lidov is well known for developing the concept of hierotopy, an innovative approach for studying the creation of sacred spaces. Hierotopy and the related concepts of ‘spatial icons’ and ‘image-paradigms’ emphasize fundamental questions about icons, including what defines them as structures, spaces, and experiences. Chapters in this volume engage with the overarching theme of icons of space by employing, contrasting, and complementing methods of hierotopy with more traditional approaches such as iconography. Examinations of icons have traditionally been positioned within strictly historical, theological, socio-economic, political, and art history domains, but this volume poses epistemological questions about the creation of sacred spaces that are instead inclusive of multi-layered iconic ideas and the lived experiences of the creators and beholders of such spaces. This book contributes to image theory and theories of architecture and sacred space. Simultaneously, it moves beyond colonial studies that predominantly focus on questions of religion and politics as expressions of privileged knowledge and power. In Shrines in a Fluid Space: The Shaping of New Holy Sites in the Ionian Islands, the Peloponnese and Crete under Venetian Rule (14th-16th Centuries), Argyri Dermitzaki reconstructs the devotional experiences within the Greek realm of the Venetian Stato da Mar of Western European pilgrims sailing to Jerusalem. The author traces the evolution of the various forms of cultic sites and the perception of them as nodes of a wider network of the pilgrims’ ‘holy topography’. She scrutinises travelogues in conjunction with archaeological, visual and historical evidence and offers a study of the cultic phenomena and sites invested with exceptional meaning at the main ports of call of the pilgrims’ galleys in the Ionian Sea, the Peloponnese and Crete.

Oggetto del presente lavoro è l'analisi della disciplina giuridica dei beni culturali, con particolare riferimento a quelli di interesse religioso, evidenziando la relazione inscindibile tra elementi materiali ed immateriali nella consapevolezza che il patrimonio culturale rappresenta l'espressione più profonda dell'identità di una comunità, delle radici e dei valori che ne plasmano l'essenza. Heidegger sosteneva che l’arte è “custode creativa della verità”: nel caso dei beni di interesse religioso le verità divine sono state trasmesse lungo i secoli attraverso variegate tipologie di espressioni culturali e cultuali, la cui valorizzazione, nell’epoca attuale caratterizzata da un imponente processo di globalizzazione, rappresenta dunque una tappa imprescindibile della promozione del dialogo interreligioso e interculturale. Oltre al loro significato spirituale, i beni culturali di interesse religioso, proprio perché rappresentano un elemento essenziale della storia, della cultura e dell’identità del territorio in cui si trovano, sono infatti una manifestazione tangibile della pluralità di sistemi culturali e tradizioni che caratterizzano l’area euro-Mediterranea. Tale compito di valorizzazione finalizzata alla più ampia fruizione non è demandato solo ai fedeli, ma all’intera comunità democratica e dunque enti locali, Stati, organizzazioni internazionali, comunità religiose e attori della società civile, secondo varie modalità e livelli.

For some time historiography has set itself the objective of studying the ways in which European society in the late Middle Ages and the early Modern Age has related to environmental disasters, addressing the perceptions and the reactions, the strategies implemented by the governments, and the repercussions on the religious mentality. In this way it has identified a sphere of investigation that is an authentic multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary workshop, engaging historians of institutions, culture and mentality. At the conference held in San Miniato, Italian and European historians compared notes on this subject, addressing it from different points of view and taking into consideration different environmental contexts (the cities and the rivers, the mountain, the sea, Italy, France, Holland, etc.) and different viewpoints (those of the governments, the lay 'intellectuals', the men of religion, etc.).

Dalla chiesa della Madonna del Parto a Sutri alla Sainte-Chapelle di Parigi, dal santuario di Santiago di Compostela a quello francescano della Verna: in tutta Europa, dalla tarda antichità al Rinascimento, sono sorti migliaia di santuari. Luoghi di secolare pellegrinaggio e devozione popolare. André Vauchez, uno dei più autorevoli maestri della storia medievale, ci accompagna alla scoperta del loro significato. I santuari hanno cominciato a diffondersi a partire dal IV secolo grazie al successo in Occidente del culto dei santi. Grande, infatti, era l'afflusso di pellegrini desiderosi di ottenere guarigioni, di venerare reliquie e immagini sacre legate soprattutto alle apparizioni della Madonna e dell'arcangelo Michele. Questo rappresentava un paradosso per la religione cristiana, dal momento che il suo fondatore aveva rifiutato l'idea che esistessero dei luoghi privilegiati per rivolgersi a Dio. Ma le iniziative dei vescovi e la pressione dei fedeli smussarono presto questo riserbo. André Vauchez ricostruisce la storia della formazione di questi santuari e la loro crescita all'interno del mondo cristiano occidentale fra il IV e il XVI secolo. I più rinomati furono quelli di Gerusalemme – a cominciare dal Santo Sepolcro –, San Michele Arcangelo sul Gargano e in Normandia, San Martino di Tours e Rocamadour in Francia, Santiago di Compostela in Spagna e, negli ultimi secoli del Medioevo, San Francesco ad Assisi e della Madonna di Loreto in Italia. Insieme ad altri più modesti e meno noti, questi santuari formarono una rete densa di luoghi sacri che popolò l'Europa con forme nuove di sacralità. Un'ampia iconografia completa una ricerca così vasta e originale.
