The "European Revolution" of 1989 has not only brought about dramatic and far-reaching changes in the social structure of East and West European countries, but also in the social sciences. This volume is an attempt to evaluate how sociology has been affected by this dramatic event and how it has developed in the post-revolutionary period in some selected European countries. Ten eminent representatives of sociology from Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Great Britain, Poland, and Scandinavia were presented with a set of questions which served as a common guideline for their contributions. Their answers can be summarized in the observation of the "interrelated diversity" of sociology in Europe today. The high heterogeneity and fragmentation, typical of contemporary sociological thought in Europe, are interrelated by a high degree of institutionalization and integration of sociology in the European university system. In addition, two prominent scholars from non-European countries, Japan and the US, present their views on sociology in Europe from outside. They declare the end of the period of one-sided flows of reception in sociology and foresee a strengthening of a two-way exchange between European and non-European social scientists in the twenty-first century

La sociologia ha come oggetto l’analisi dei rapporti intersoggettivi volti alla socialità in quanto distinti per un verso da quelli giuridici, politici ed economici, per un altro verso da quelli dettati dalle motivazioni psicologiche del comportamento; ma si interessa anche di questi come di tutte le modalità dell’esperienza umana nella misura in cui vi sia una relazione di implicazione fra tali modalità e il complesso dei rapporti sociali in quanto tali. In un senso più ristretto la sociologia studia la società intesa come sistema relativamente autonomo di convivenza; come nel caso ci si riferisca a quella specifica istituzione complessa, che è venuta definendosi nell’età moderna mediante un processo di differenziazione e talora di contrapposizione con lo Stato. Da questo punto di vista, però, la società si presenta anche come un’istituzione; e perciò va colta all’interno del processo di costante trasformazione della statualità, rappresentando, essa, il frutto di quella distinzione fra status societatis e stato politico, che ha costituito uno degli elementi caratterizzanti dell’epoca moderna. A causa delle difficoltà che si incontrano nel definire i confini di ciò che può essere qualificato come sociale e dei ‘pregiudizi’ con i quali può accadere di accostarsi al proprio oggetto di indagine, la sociologia è costretta a confrontarsi con paradossi e spesso anche con contraddizioni. Così, ad esempio, quando si è voluto analizzare società diverse da quella moderna occidentale, mentre si è stati costretti ad utilizzare il concetto di società (in molte altre culture del tutto assente), non si è potuto far a meno di avvertire le difficoltà che si frapponevano ad un siffatto modo di procedere; essendo quel termine, come si è detto, il frutto non innocente di una differenziazione tutta tipica della nostra forma di statualità. Queste ed altre difficoltà, tuttavia, non devono essere intese come un limite intrinseco della prospettiva sociologica; devono costituire all’opposto un motivo diretto a sollecitare un atteggiamento critico nell’impostare il metodo mediante il quale si intenda avvicinare il proprio campo di indagine.
