Its main aim is to show how Sulla revived Rome’s alliances with the local elites at a critical moment for the survival of her Mediterranean hegemony. Il volume è diviso in due parti che possono essere lette autonomamente ma che in realtà nascono e sono in stretto rapporto. La prima parte del volume illustra la metodologia seguita per la Carta delle Potenzialità Archeologiche di Faenza che è stata adottata dal PRG del 1996. Tale strumento consente di valutare a priori -con una certa approssimazione- l’impatto che possono avere le opere edilizie sul patrimonio archeologico urbano e di conseguenza di programmare l’intervento, finalizzandolo ad una più consapevole conservazione e conoscenza del passato. La seconda parte cerca di fornire una base nuova e aggiornata delle conoscenze della città intesa come unità d’insieme. A Faenza, come in tante altre città italiane, la continuità di vita, la sistematica spoliazione dei monumenti e i frequenti ‘riammodernamenti’ del centro urbano hanno cancellato la testimonianza delle precedenti fasi di vita della città. Per questo motivo è particolarmente importante il dato archeologico che in molti casi costituisce l’unica traccia per ricostruire l’assetto urbano antico. All’interno delle grandi periodizzazioni storiche (età romana, tardonatica-altomedievale, medievale-postmedievale) il volume presenta degli interventi di sintesi che analizzano l’aspetto di Faenza nel corso delle diverse fasi storiche. A questi seguono numerosi capitoli che approfondiscono i molteplici aspetti della città come, ad esempio, l’edilizia privata, le infrastrutture o le sepolture. Chiude il volume un contributo di Marzia Ceccaglia che presenta il catalogo completo delle pavimentazioni rinvenute nel territorio dell’antica Forum Popili.
