Questo testo deriva dalla decennale esperienza accumulata durante la dettatura del corso di Sistemi Elettronici Programmabili tenuto presso l’Università di Napoli Federico II. Il corso è destinato ai laureandi in Ingegneria Elettronica ed ai laureandi in Ingegneria Informatica, finalizza le conoscenze acquisite durante i corsi di base di elettronica digitale e rende gli studenti in grado di sviluppare un sistema elettronico digitale completo. Le tecniche di progetto presentate sono di validità generale e si applicano alla progettazione della maggioranza dei sistemi elettronici digitali. Quando si arriva all’implementazione ed agli esperimenti, le metodologie sono invece particolarizzate per la realizzazione di sistemi digitali che utilizzano circuiti programmabili di tipo FPGA e CPLD. Tali dispositivi coniugano tempi di sviluppo ridotti e bassi costi e sono la scelta progettuale che più rapidamente si sta diffondendo. Dispositivi di tipo FPGA sono la scelta d’elezione sia per lo sviluppo di prototipi, sia per la realizzazione di prodotti aventi diffusione nell’ordine della migliaia di pezzi.

I linguaggi per la descrizione dell’hardware sono essenziali per la progettazione digitale. Il libro presenta il linguaggio Verilog, uno standard mondiale a larghissima diffusione e il più richiesto per il ruolo di progettista di circuiti digitali. Il Verilog è spiegato mediante esempi di utilizzo pratico limitando i costrutti a quanto è utile per una progettazione agile, affidabile e riutilizzabile. Buona enfasi è data ai costrutti del linguaggio Verilog da usare per la verifica del funzionamento dei circuiti distinguendo quindi un Verilog orientato alla sintesi del circuito da un Verilog orientato alla verifica. Le implementazioni sono effettuate su dispositivi FPGA al fine di familiarizzare il lettore con una tecnologia molto utilizzata da piccole e grandi aziende. Il sistema di sviluppo utilizzato per la progettazione, la verifica e la sperimentazione dei progetti è Quartus, un software distribuito gratuitamente da Intel. I circuiti sono verificati sperimentalmente utilizzando una scheda dimostrativa il cui utilizzo è spiegato nel testo ma che non è necessaria per la comprensione degli argomenti. Il libro presenta infine una breve storia della progettazione digitale, la struttura dei dispositivi FPGA in commercio e completa gli argomenti esposti con cenni su conoscenze accessorie utili per una comprensione di tutto il testo. Per quanto focalizzati su dispositivi FPGA, i contenuti sono validi per qualsiasi progetto digitale implementato, ad esempio, su ASIC, CPLD o System On Chip.
