O crescimento da demanda mundial de alimentos induzira a um rapido crescimento da agricultura irrigada na regiao semi-arida, face as excelentes condicoes para obtencao de produtos exportaveis. Alem da disponibilidade de variedades melhoradas e adaptadas e de um conhecimento adequado dos sistemas de producao, precisa-se tecnicas de manejo de agua e solo que visem a melhoria da eficiencia de irrigacao, a melhor oportunidade de aplicacao e baixo custo operacional. No Vale do Sao Francisco, area de acao prioritaria da CODEVASF, existe um potencial de irrigacao de 503.500 hectares, dos quais a CODEVASF tem como meta basica a irrigacao de 165.000 hectares ate 1979. Com a finalidade de gerar a informacao tecnologica adequada para dar suporte ao programa de irrigacaodo Vale do Sao Francisco, definido no II Plano Nacional de Desenvolvimento, precisa-se de uma acao vigorosa em experimentacao e pesquisas em agricultura irrigada. Neste documento apresenta-se um programa prioritario de pesquisas em agricultura irrigada para o Vale do Sao Francisco que tem por finalidade dar apoio as atividades de operacao dos projetos de irrigacao da CODEVASF e das empresas privadas...
