In contrast to the effortless ease with which human beings control their limbs, the design of controllers for robotic manipulator arms is a detailed, meticulous business. Motors controlling the arms need to be started and stopped at just the right moment so that the performance demanded by the user may be achieved at the end of a complicated manoeuvre. And yet, the same user wishes to express the task for the robot in the simplest possible terms without reference to the minute details of control sequences that his task demands. It is the design of such inter faces between man and machine that is the subject of trus volume. Parent and Laurgeau develop the subject in a direct and logical order. They first explain the principles of maximal effort control which not only ensure that motors are driven to provide high accuracy, but also that this should be done with the least waste of energy and in the shortest possible time. In this context, they describe the operation of pneumatic logical devices that make rapid decisions at power levels that exceed, by several orders, those that can be achieved with electronic devices. They achieve this whilst keeping the reader aware of the logical principles that are involved in the design of master control units: the devices responsible for appropriate actions being taken as a function of time.

This monograph describes the determination by X-ray methods and the structural analysis of one of the largest single polypeptide chain proteins, glycogen phosphorylase. It is shown that the large protein conforms to the rules deduced from smaller protein molecules and provides examples of almost every structural feature. The structure is analysed with special reference to the hydrogen bonding pattern of secondary structural elements, the distributions and interactions of the buried amino acids, the role of the water structure and the details of the subunit interface of the dimer. The results show some unusual secondary structural elements and environments for some side chain atoms. As methods for prediction of protein structures from amino acid sequences advance from assignments of secondary structural elements to predicted tertiary assemblies, knowledge of the preferred and exceptional detailed interactions of the amino acid side chains will need to be incorporated. Glycogen phosphorylase provides a wealth of examples of these interactions.This monograph is a useful reference on protein structure and function.

Discovered and first isolated in 1966 in C. De Duve's laboratory, peroxisomes - organelles which are present in nearly all eukaryotic cells - are still not fully understood. More than 40 peroxisomal enzymes catalyzing a variety of reactions have been characterized. Moreover, peroxisomes can be regarded as toxicological indicators: several compounds, including hypolipemic drugs, plasticizers or pesticides trigger their proliferation. This proliferation may lead to hepatocarcinogenesis in rodents. Interest in peroxisomes stems not only fromtheir biology, but also because there is a deficiency of peroxisomal functions in several genetic diseases. Some genes involved in inborn errors of peroxisomal function have recently been identified. In this manual, based on a FEBS Advanced Course on peroxisomes, protocols on the following topics are described in detail: Isolation and characterization of peroxisomes by ultracentrifugationand immunoblotting; gene regulation studied by mRNA isolation, hybridizationand DNA cell transfection; use of cell lines as peroxisome proliferator targets; transformation with retrovirus; peroxisomes as toxicological markers; cytochrome P450 induction; drug design and computer analysis of ligand/receptor interaction involved in peroxisomal gene expression.

This book constitutes the Proceedings of the conference 'Chemical Structures: The International Language of Chemistry' which was held at Leeuwenhorst Congress Centre, Noordwijkerhout in the Netherlands, between May 31 and June 4, 1987. The conference was jointly sponsored by the Chemical Structure Association, the American Chemical Society Division of Chemical Information, and the Chemical Information Groups of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the German Chemical Society. The purpose of the conference was to bring together experts and an international professional audience to discuss and to further basic and applied research and development in the processing, storage, retrieval and use of chemical structures, to focus international attention on the importance of chemical information and the vital research being carried out in chemical information science and to foster co-operation among major chemical information organisations in North America and Europe. Subjects covered included integrated in-house databases, substructure searching methodology, spectral databanks, new technologies (microcomputers, CD-ROM, parallel processing and expert systems) and chemical reactions. The keynote address was given by Mike Lynch of the University of Sheffield. In this, the opening chapter of the book, Mike discusses progress made in chemical information science in the last fifteen years and describes his own approach to research. In a plenary session, Myra Williams of Merck, Sharp and Dohme considered future trends from the point of view of the information manager and strategic planner in industry. She emphasises the need for integration, open architecture and a uniform user interface.
