This book focuses on world-wide research on contamination, toxicity and treatment of drinking water. Water of sufficient quality to serve as drinking water is termed potable water whether it is used as such or not. Although many sources are utilised by humans, some contain disease vectors or pathogens and cause long-term health problems if they do not meet certain water quality guidelines. Water that is not harmful for human beings is sometimes called safe water, water which is not contaminated to the extent of being unhealthy. The available supply of drinking water is an important criterion of carrying capacity, the population level that can be supported by planet Earth. Typically water supply networks deliver single or multiple qualities of water, whether it is to be used for drinking, washing or landscape irrigation; one counterexample is urban China, where drinking water can be optionally delivered by a separate tap.

Drinking water policies and research are intimately linked. It is thanks to the scientific progress made over the last 25 years in identifying and controlling toxic products in drinking water that regulations have developed in such a way that the protection of public health from waterborne diseases has drastically improved. The integration of research outputs into the policy-making progress requires close cooperation among the scientific and policy communities, which is not always straightforward. Exchanges among scientific and policy-making communities are certainly representing key elements of progress for a better environmental protection. In this respect, analytical developments linked to drinking water are at the core of the science-policy debate. This book "Analytical Methods for Drinking Water: Advances in Sampling and Analysis" reflects this awareness in joining recent analytical developments with policy considerations. A first chapter gives an overview of EU and US drinking water policies, as well as on standardization. Analytical developments are described in depth in the second chapter, focusing on bromate in drinking water. The third chapter deals with the development of a sampling protocol for lead in drinking water, thus mixing analytical development with standardization needs. Finally, the fourth chapter focuses on standardization aspects (pre-normative research) related to materials in contact with drinking water. This book, written by experts in the field of drinking water policy and analysis, illustrates recent scientific advances in this area, which have contributed to policy development and will be of direct use to policy-makers, water scientists, researchers and analytical laboratories.

"This report presents the first ever estimates of the population using 'safely managed' drinking water and sanitation services - meaning drinking water free from contamination that is available at home when needed, and toilets whereby excreta are treated and disposed of safely. It also documents progress towards ending open defecation and achieving universal access to basic services. The report identifies a number of critical data gaps that will need to be addressed in order to enable systematic monitoring of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets and to realize the commitment to 'leave no one behind'."--Publisher's description.

The issues surrounding water services are some of the most critical challenges facing not only the United States, but also the global community today. The Roundtable on Environmental Health Sciences, Research, and Medicine of the Institute of Medicine convened a workshop in October 2007, summarized in this volume, to address objectives related to Sustainable Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Services. One of the objectives of the workshop was to think about the interdependence of environmental health and human health as connected through water. Organizations cannot discuss water without considering the interrelationship of sanitation and hygiene. It is the convergence of these strategies that promotes healthy outcomes for both individuals and the environment. A second objective of the workshop was to consider how planning, management, and interdisciplinary approaches-including technology, social behavioral issues, gender, health, environment, economic, and political aspects-can be integrated to arrive at sustainable solutions. Many organizations and agencies are trying to forge a path toward sustainable practices in water, but the various sectors utilizing and governing water services are not interconnected. More integration and a greater understanding of holistic approaches are needed.

This comprehensive volume provides a state-of-the-art review of the analysis and treatment of drinking water for microbial contamination, the direct cause of diseases and infant mortality primarily in the third world, but affecting industrialized countries as well. As a result of growing concern over waterborne epidemics, the 1980s were dedicated as the International Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Decade by the United Nations. This book aims to summarize the results of this period of intensified research in a collection that will be of value to microbiologists, engineers, epidemiologists, sanitarians, health officials and scientists within governmental and international agencies as well as others interested in drinking water microbiology. Each chapter combines basic principles with recent research results, leading the reader from the microbiology of source water to that of drinking water treatment and distribution as well as the discussion of prominent pathogenic organisms, and concludes with testing methods, monitoring and statistical approaches.
