A prominent authority on China’s Belt and Road Initiative reveals the global risks lurking within Beijing’s project of the century China’s Belt and Road Initiative is the world’s most ambitious and misunderstood geoeconomic vision. To carry out President Xi Jinping’s flagship foreign-policy effort, China promises to spend over one trillion dollars for new ports, railways, fiber-optic cables, power plants, and other connections. The plan touches more than one hundred and thirty countries and has expanded into the Arctic, cyberspace, and even outer space. Beijing says that it is promoting global development, but Washington warns that it is charting a path to global dominance. Taking readers on a journey to China’s projects in Asia, Europe, and Africa, Jonathan E. Hillman reveals how this grand vision is unfolding. As China pushes beyond its borders and deep into dangerous territory, it is repeating the mistakes of the great powers that came before it, Hillman argues. If China succeeds, it will remake the world and place itself at the center of everything. But Xi may be overreaching: all roads do not yet lead to Beijing.

The global implications of China's rise as a global actor In 2005, a senior official in the George W. Bush administration expressed the hope that China would emerge as a “responsible stakeholder” on the world stage. A dozen years later, the Trump administration dramatically shifted course, instead calling China a “strategic competitor” whose actions routinely threaten U.S. interests. Both assessments reflected an underlying truth: China is no longer just a “rising” power. It has emerged as a truly global actor, both economically and militarily. Every day its actions affect nearly every region and every major issue, from climate change to trade, from conflict in troubled lands to competition over rules that will govern the uses of emerging technologies. To better address the implications of China's new status, both for American policy and for the broader international order, Brookings scholars conducted research over the past two years, culminating in a project: Global China: Assessing China's Growing Role in the World. The project is intended to furnish policy makers and the public with hard facts and deep insights for understanding China's regional and global ambitions. The initiative draws not only on Brookings's deep bench of China and East Asia experts, but also on the tremendous breadth of the institution's security, strategy, regional studies, technological, and economic development experts. Areas of focus include the evolution of China's domestic institutions; great power relations; the emergence of critical technologies; Asian security; China's influence in key regions beyond Asia; and China's impact on global governance and norms. Global China: Assessing China's Growing Role in the World provides the most current, broad-scope, and fact-based assessment of the implications of China's rise for the United States and the rest of the world.

The Three Gorges dam, currently being constructed on the Yantgze River in China, is controversial both inside and outside China due to the population in the area and the environmental impacts. Using material previously unavailable in any Western language, it analyses the Chinese discussion and policy-making for the resettlement process. It also discusses the development aspects of resettling such a large population (officially 1.2 million), as well as assessing the actual and potential impact of resettlement on this population.

The International Development Of China written by Yat-sen Sun and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-04-16 with History categories.

This book presents a rough sketch of Dr. Yat-sen Sun’s (1866-1925) requirements for modernizing China and elaborates on Sun’s desire for the then China to implement a sweeping wave of economic reconstruction and development reforms concerning its railroads and highways, river conservancy and irrigation, new ports and modern cities, by absorbing international capital coming to China. In the preface to this book, first published in 1922, Yat-sen Sun posits, “Unless the Chinese question can be settled peacefully, another world war greater and more terrible than the one just past will be inevitable.” In order to solve the “Chinese question,” he suggested that the country’s vast resources be developed internationally under a socialistic scheme, both for the good of the world in general and the Chinese people in particular. It was his hope that such a scheme would abolish the prevalent spheres of influence of the time, and that the class struggle between capital and labor could be avoided. In this book, Yat-sen Sun presents his solutions for three great questions of global importance: International War, Commercial War and Class War.

This volume translates crucial Chinese documents on a debate currently raging in China on a proposed project that has enormous implications for its environmental, economic, and social impact - the Three Gorges (Sanxia) Project on the Yangtze River. The most massive water resource project ever planned in China and one of the largest in the world, the Three Gorges Project would cost $1.1 billion to build, would necessitate the relocation of 1.1 million people, would flood a 375-mile-long area and thus destroy some of China's - indeed the world's - most beautiful scenery, and would threaten the extinction of a rare river porpoise. The editors seek to place the arguments in a clear and scholarly perspective that helps to make this book a valuable source of information.

"For much of the twentieth century, the May Fourth movement of 1919 was seen as the foundational moment of modernity in China. Recent examinations of literary and cultural modernity in China have, however, led to a questioning of this view. By approaching May Fourth from novel perspectives, the authors of the eight studies in this volume seek to contribute to the ongoing critique of the movement. The essays are centered on the intellectual and cultural/historical motivations and practices behind May Fourth discourse and highlight issues such as strategies of discourse formation, scholarly methodologies, rhetorical dispositions, the manipulation of historical sources, and the construction of modernity by means of the reification of China’s literary past."

The companies and their business environment are facing drastic challenges within the age of globalisation. On the one hand, the companies are exposed to market saturation and enormous pressure in Europe and the USA, while on the other hand, they notice attractive production locations and a huge market potential in China. In the highly industrialised nations, migration to so-called low cost countries has become a business management trend. When it comes to the construction of new industrial facilities - which is the foundation for producing new products, project management becomes a key part of the globalisation process. However, project management in China leads to new challenges and traps for western executives. Unlike in European countries, China is an 'individual related' country, where the personal relationships has a greater effect in business success. Knowledge of human nature becomes more important in China than it is regarded in western countries, where facts and figures predominantly determine the communication within the business environment. In China, the soft side of management provides a new challenge. What is the key to successful business in China? It is not only dependent on hard factors or hard skills such as knowledge, specialised know-how or expertise. The personal culture in China requires so-called soft skills, which adversely affect business success. They are often underestimated in intercultural project management, in which the project environment demands a collaborative partnership rather than a command-and-control managerial hierarchy. Practice shows that the human factor has a prominent position in project success. To be successful, major attention needs to be drawn to the Chinese way of thinking. Soft skills in communication, negotiation, conflict resolution and team work play a decisive role in business practice and prevent stumbling blocks. To handle business and the differences in tradition, culture and mentality, a sensitive flair is

This report summarizes the experience and lessons learned in a community-driven development pilot project in the People's Republic of China from 2006 to 2009. The involvement of government and nongovernment organizations, innovative project implementation mechanisms, capacity building, and targeting of vulnerable groups were all instrumental in the success of the project, which had a positive impact on individual and community well-being, on the provision of local government services, and in reducing poverty. The report also discusses challenges that arose during the project that will have to be addressed before the community-driven development approach is more widely implemented in the country and elsewhere in Asia.
