This publication has been carried out on behalf of the Great Ape Survival Partnership (GRASP), established by UNEP and UNESCO in collaboration with a wide range of non-governmental organisations in response to growing concern over the plight of the orangutan, the chimpanzee, the bonobo and the gorilla. The report used the latest satellite imagery and data from the Government of Indonesia to assess changes in the forests of one part of south-east Asia. The results indicate that illegal logging, fires and the plantation of crops such as palm oil are intruding extensively into Indonesia's national parks, the last safehold of the orangutan. The orangutans share this habitat with a wild range of other threatened and ecologically important species including the Sumatran tiger, Sumatran rhinoceros and Asian elephant.

“Temara had done her species proud and proven that captive orangutans do have a place in the jungle of tomorrow. I felt honoured that I was by her side during the first part of her remarkable world-first journey.” In 2006, Kylie Bullo and her colleagues at Perth Zoo were part of a bold, groundbreaking experiment that many experts believed was doomed to failure – to return a zoo-born orangutan to the wild. The orangutan they chose was Temara, a fiery redhead with a will of her own. Temara had always been strong, intelligent and independent, but preparing for the return to the jungles of her ancestors would put all her best qualities – and those of her keepers – to the test. This is the story of that remarkable journey and of the remarkable woman who helped make it happen. It proves that the right blend of passion, compassion and hard work can achieve what many thought was impossible. And it brings new hope to those fighting to bring this magnificent creature back from the brink of extinction.

As an author, speaker and founder of the international charity, The Orangutan Project, he is recognised globally as an expert in his chosen field. In his latest book, Orangutans. My Cousins, My Friends he shares with us the fascinating inside story of his personal journey, a journey which ultimately lead him to dedicate his life to the care and conservation of all orangutans and their natural habitats. Combined with his personal insights he shares the captivating and sometimes challenging stories of the many orangutans he was worked for over the years. And perhaps, most importantly, he explains the key philosophies underpinning the work of his organisation, The Orangutan Project, and outlines the fundamental shifts in thinking and behaviour that we, as humans, must make if we are to avoid the imminent extinction of our majestic orange cousins. Part memoir, part philosophical discussion, part scientific case for conservation and 100% a call to action for all who wish to help save the orangutan, Leif's book will inspire, inform and touch hearts.... And it may just change the way you see and act in the world forever. "--Website.
