Projecting 9/11 examines sensibilities and ideologies that arose after September 11, 2001, and how these intersect with issues of race, gender, sexuality, and citizenship in contemporary mainstream films. The authors argue that the social and political project that is “9/11” can be found in most cultural artifacts produced after the date, including film. In essence, Hollywood films project the 9/11 project. The book analyzes the specific ways in which recent Hollywood films have become both powerful forces of significance and also forceful representations of reality about post-9/11 life. From films that explicitly treat subjects related to 9/11, such as United 93 and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, to films that show post-9/11 themes in less-expected ways, such as Eat, Pray, Love and World War Z, the authors explore tensions around race, gender, and sexuality. The book examines our perceptions of reality after the events of September 11, 2001, as shown by one of the more influential means of cultural representation—Hollywood films.

This monograph examines the rhetorical nature and function of representations of the future in political discourse, focusing on political actors use of hegemonic images of future reality to achieve their political goals. It argues that a key ideological dimension of political rhetoric lies in politicians use of projections of the future to legitimate policies and actions. This argument is grounded in systemic-functional and critical discourse analyses of the Bush Doctrine, the U.S. policy response to the September 11 terrorist attacks which sanctioned a preemptive military posture. Evaluates the macroeconomic impacts of the 9/11 attack on U.S. real GDP growth and the unemployment rate by examining how forecasts of these variables were revised after the attack occurred. By this approach, the immediate impact of the 9/11 attack was to reduce real GDP growth in 2001 by 0.5%, and to increase the unemployment rate by 0.11% (reduce employment by 598,000 jobs). Forecasted real GDP growth in 2002 fell dramatically immediately after the 9/11 attack but then recovered fully. The forecasted unemployment rate in 2002 rose sharply immediately after the 9/11 attack, but unlike real GDP growth, it never subsequently returned to a pre-9/11 level. Illustrations. An econometric model of private land-use decisions is used to project land use to 2030 for each county in the continental U.S. On a nat. scale, forest area is projected to increase overall between 0.1 & 0.2% per year between now & 2030. Urban area is projected to increase by 68 million acres, & cropland, pasture, rangeland, & Conservation Reserve Program land is projected to decline in area.
