Excerpt from Projective Geometry, Vol. 2 The present volume is an attempt to carry out the program out lined in the preface to Volume I. Unfortunately, Professor Young was obliged by the pressure of other duties to cease his collabora tion at an early stage of the composition of this volume. Much of the work on the first chapters had already been done when this hap pened, but the form of exposition has been changed so much since then that although Professor Young deserves credit for constructive work, he cannot fairly be held responsible for mistakes or oversights. Professor Young has kindly read the proof sheets of this volume, as have also Professors A. B. Coble and A. A. Bennett. Most of the drawings were made by Dr. J. W. Alexander. I offer my thanks to all of these gentlemen and also to Messrs. Ginn and Company, who have shown their usual courtesy and efficiency while converting the manuscript into a book. The second volume has been arranged so that one may pass on a first reading from the end of Chapter VII, Volume I, to the beginning of Volume II. The later chapters of Volume I may well be read in connection with the part of Volume II from Chapter V onward. I shall pass by the opportunity to discuss any of the pedagogical questions which have been raised in connection with the first vol ume and which may easily be foreseen for the second. It is to be expected that there will continue to be a general agreement among those who have not made the experiment, that an abstract method of treatment of geometry is unsuited to beginning students. In this book, however, we are committed to the abstract point of view. We have in mind two principles for the classification of any theorem of geometry: (a) the axiomatic basis, or bases, from which it can be derived, or, in other words, the class of spaces in which it can be valid; and (b) the group to which it belongs in a given space. Excerpt from Projective Geometry, Vol. 1 This interpretation is a concrete representation of our assumptions. Every proposition derived from the assumptions must be true of this system of triples. Hence none of the assumptions can be logically inconsistent with the rest; otherwise contradictory statements would be true of this system of triples. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from A Course of Plane Geometry for Advanced Students, Vol. 2 The author ))olds very strongly that the educational value of higher geometry lies in that novelty of idea and generality of con ception which is more characteristic of this subject than of any other branch of elementary mathematics. A course of geometrical conics, based on the focus-directrix definition and developed by Euclidean methods, provides excellent practice in rider-work but although the student may gain from it a systematic knowledge of the metrical properties of the conic, yet he will assimilate few, if any, really new ideas. On the other hand a projective treatment introduces the student to a region of geometrical thought, unlike anything he has seen in the past - a transition as abrupt and fertile as the crossing from algebra to the calculus. There are constant surprises, apparent contradictions, features of absorbing interest, and principles which, by the generality of their application and the variety of their expression, cannot fail to fascinate the reader and incite him to investigate their developments for himself. Experience proves incontestably that analytical methods frequently elucidate difficult geometrical conceptions. The theory of ideal elements in pure geometry, the notion of one-to - one correspondence and its application to homography and involution, the principles of conical projection are undoubtedly illuminated by a joint use of geometry and analysis.
