O livro “Projeto UFG Solar: Experiências e Contribuições” inaugura uma nova era para a gestão energética em Instituições Públicas de Ensino Superior no Brasil. Em conjunto com outros 20 projetos que compõem a Chamada 001/2016 da Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica (ANEEL), aprovados e executados em instituições de ensino superior (IES) das cinco regiões do país, em parceria com as empresas concessionárias locais, foi possível implantar diversas soluções de eficiência energética, geração de energia renovável, medição de energia, retrofit de iluminação, educação energética, entre outras ações. O livro evidencia uma mudança importante para a garantia da perenidade e da amplitude das soluções e dos movimentos iniciados com os projetos da Chamada 001/2016 da ANEEL, que contam com a participação ampla e ativa de alunos, funcionários e professores no estudo e no desenvolvimento de projetos dentro da Universidade Federal de Goiás (UFG). A universidade, como detentora do conhecimento e das melhores práticas nas diversas áreas, precisa aplicar, em suas próprias instalações, o que ensina em sala de aula. Isso contribuiu para que os alunos, durante o processo de formação, percebam que a teoria de sala de aula é aplicada em projetos e na gestão da instituição em que estudam. Além disso, é motivadora e gratificante para eles a oportunidade de participarem dessa transformação. Da mesma maneira, é imprescindível que a sociedade possa enxergar, na universidade, um modelo de gestão de recursos públicos, humanos e naturais. Vivemos uma era de grande transformação no clima e na sociedade, temos uma agenda da Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU) subscrita por mais de 150 países indicando 17 objetivos para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável, sendo que os ambientes universitários são os mais adequados para liderarem com essa transformação.

One of the great challenges in higher education is to help students integrate their learning. In a rapidly changing world, there is an ever-increasing need to monitor the Earth’s resources and manage it sustainably for future generations. Earth observation from satellites is critical to provide information required for informed and timely decision making in this regard. Satellite-based earth observation has advanced rapidly over the last 50 years, and there is a plethora of satellite sensors imaging the Earth at finer spatial and spectral resolutions as well as high temporal resolutions. The amount of data available for any single location on the Earth is now at the petabyte-scale. An ever-increasing capacity and computing power is needed to handle such large datasets. The Google Earth Engine (GEE) is a cloud-based computing platform that was established by Google to support such data processing. This facility allows for the storage, processing and analysis of spatial data using centralized high-power computing resources, allowing scientists, researchers, hobbyists and anyone else interested in such fields to mine this data and understand the changes occurring on the Earth’s surface. This book presents research that applies the Google Earth Engine in mining, storing, retrieving and processing spatial data for a variety of applications that include vegetation monitoring, cropland mapping, ecosystem assessment, and gross primary productivity, among others. Datasets used range from coarse spatial resolution data, such as MODIS, to medium resolution datasets (Worldview -2), and the studies cover the entire globe at varying spatial and temporal scales.

The Atlantic Forest is one of the 36 hotspots for biodiversity conservation worldwide. It is a unique, large biome (more than 3000 km in latitude; 2500 in longitude), marked by high biodiversity, high degree of endemic species and, at the same time, extremely threatened. Approximately 70% of the Brazilian population lives in the area of this biome, which makes the conflict between biodiversity conservation and the sustainability of the human population a relevant issue.
