The Authenticity Of Prometheus Bound written by Mark Griffith and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-07-26 with Drama categories.

Prometheus Bound was accepted without question in antiquity as the work of Aeschylus, and most modern authorities endorse this ascription. But since the nineteenth century several leading scholars have come to doubt Aeschylean authorship. Dr Griffith here provides a thorough and wide-ranging study of this problem, and concludes: 'Had Prometheus Bound been newly dug up from the sands of Oxyrhynchus... few scholars would regard it as the work of Aeschylus.' After a preliminary assessment of the external evidence, Dr Griffith examines minutely the idiosyncrasies of metre, dramatic technique, vocabulary, syntax and expression to be found in the play, applying the same tests to other plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides in order to provide a control for his methods. In his final chapter he discusses how the conditions surrounding the ancient transmission and cataloguing of texts may have led to the ascription to Aeschylus.

Chaucer's Canterbury Tales is one of the oldest and most widely studied works of English literature. The tales provide a glimpse of medieval life, and the professions of the pilgrims figure prominently in the poetry. To have a clear understanding of Chaucer's work, the reader needs to know about the vocations of the pilgrims. For some 600 years, this information has been difficult to locate. This reference work conveniently synthesizes and discusses information about the occupation of each of Chaucer's pilgrims and provides an historical context. The volume contains individual entries for each of Chaucer's pilgrims, and the entries share a similar format to foster comparison. Each entry includes three parts. First, the pilgrim's profession is discussed in terms of the daily routine of the medieval occupation. Second, the vocation is examined in terms of its reflection in the tale told by the pilgrim. Third, the vocation and the tale are discussed, when possible, in relation to the descriptions of the characters provided in the General Prologue. Each entry includes a bibliography, and the volume concludes with a list of works for further reading.

A Concise Survey Of Western Civilization written by Brian A. Pavlac and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-02-19 with History categories.

This lively text offers a brief, readable description of our common Western heritage. Providing a tightly focused narrative and interpretive structure, Brian A. Pavlac covers the basic historical information that all educated adults should know. His joined terms “supremacies and diversities” develop major themes of conflict and creativity throughout history. “Supremacies” centers on the use of power to dominate societies, ranging from warfare to ideologies. Supremacy seeks stability, order, and incorporation. “Diversities” encompasses the creative impulse that produces new ideas, as well as the efforts of groups of people to define themselves as “different.” Diversity creates change, opportunity, and individuality. These themes of historical tension and change—whether applied to political, economic, technological, social, or cultural trends—offer a bridging explanatory organization. The text is also informed by five topical themes: technological innovation, migration and conquest, political and economic decision making, church and state, and disputes about the meaning of life. Throughout, judicious “basic principles” present summaries of historical realities and primary source projects offer students the chance to evaluate differing points of view about the past. Written with flair, this easily accessible yet deeply knowledgeable text provides all the essentials for courses on Western Civilization.

It' s the eleventh century and Islam, born from the sands of the Arabian Desert, has spread from Syria to Spain. Muslims now rule a large part of what was once the Roman Empire. Eude de Châtillon, a monk at the monastery of Cluny, France, does not like what he sees. He leads expeditions to free Spain from its Muslim rulers. When he becomes Pope Urban II, he urges good Christians everywhere to free Jerusalem, and so the crusades begin. As pope, however, he is not able to lead the fight, so he gives authority to Peter the Hermit, a popular priest. At Peter's bidding, thousands of peasants join the crusade, which was named "The Popular Crusade." Fierce battles are fought throughout Spain, the Holy Land, and elsewhere as Christians and Muslims compete for power. The repercussions of this historic struggle are still evident today in the continued fighting in the Middle East; Muslim attitudes about the Western world and memories of the September 11 attacks. Knights of the Cross is the complete report of all the Crusades and a must-read for anyone struggling to understand how religious conflicts of the past have shaped the world today.
