Depuis plus de quinze années, ils répondent à un engouement qui ne se tarit pas et va même s'amplifiant. Le phénomène fascine ! II dérange aussi parce qu'il suscite des interrogations, des remises en cause de nos modes de vie contemporains. Mais pourquoi faudrait-il nécessairement aller à pied à Compostelle ? Aujourd'hui, les pèlerins vont à Rome ou à Jérusalem en utilisant tous les moyens de locomotion. Alors, pourquoi pas Saint-Jacques ? Pour cette raison, Les Routes de Compostelle en France (volume 2) sont destinées à des pèlerins ou de simples visiteurs, mais motorisés. Cet ouvrage inventorie en détail le patrimoine au fil des étapes ; il permet aussi de profiter des merveilleux paysage des grandes voies (Domitia, Arles et Vézelay) en suivant d'aussi près que possible leurs tracés "historiques", le long des routes secondaires ou vicinales toutes proches. L'aspect pédestre n'est pas pour autant oublié. Sur chaque itinéraire décrit, quelques étapes emblématiques du parcours ont été choisies afin que chacun ait un aperçu concret du cheminement à pied vers Saint-Jacques.
